Founded in 2006, the KOGRF is a non-governmental organization with the purpose of educating Kansans on the vital role the industry plays in advancing our state and sustaining our nation’s energy supply. As the need for viable domestic resources continues to grow, we are proud to represent the oil and natural gas producers of Kansas and the energy solutions they provide for our country.

In 1892, a drill bit reached just 832 feet below the ground in Neodesha, Kansas, and changed the state’s history.

William Mills’ discovery, Norman No. 1, became the first commercial oil well in the Mid-Continent Oil Field. What started as one successful well helped attract investors, bring refineries to the state and establish Kansas as an important part of America’s growing oil industry.

Norman No. 1 eventually stopped producing, but its legacy is still part of Kansas today. The original site is now home to a replica and museum that preserve the story of where Kansas’ oil industry began.

134 years later, Norman No. 1 remains a reminder that some of Kansas’ biggest stories started with a hole in the ground.

From the article: "Energy producers are price takers, not price makers. No one accused them of manipulating the price when it dropped to minus $37 a barrel in 2020. If producers could manipulate the price, they would certainly never have allowed it to drop below zero. They had no control over the price then, and they have no control over the price now."

In July 1922, straight-line winds blew over this well on the Herberge Lease, north of Oil Hill.

Look closely and you’ll spot two men in the photo: one standing all the way on top of the overturned well and another underneath it. That man on top was certainly not afraid of heights! His willingness to climb up there gives us a striking look at both the scale of the well and the bravery of the people who worked in Kansas’ early oilfields.

More than 104 years later, photos like this offer a glimpse into the people, places and challenges that shaped Kansas’ oil industry. 🛢
