Do you feel fearful when you ride? Or when you even think about riding? Do you get queasy before you enter the ring for your dressage test? Does your mind go blank and you forget your test at every show? Have you had a traumatic accident, and you’re ashamed to admit it but the thought of getting back on your horse terrifies you?

If you can relate to these situations, then read on for five easy hacks to kick your fear to the curb.
Oh, wait. That isn’t this article. Because fear isn’t a simple thing.

It’s caused by chemicals in your brain creating a potent concoction that you’re being forced to consume— but the feeling isn’t anything like the fun of cocktail hour with friends. And because fear (as well as anxiety, stress, and the aftereffects of trauma) deserves respect. Its goal is to keep to you alive, after all, and a more thoughtful approach can actually bring you to the other side of fear by remapping the pathways in your brain.

If ignoring, overriding, or trying to shout down your fear isn’t working, read this reprint from USDF Connection for a look at brain function, how stress affects your brain, answering the eternal question, and a gentle guideline that may help: https://yourdressage.org/2025/02/20/the-internal-art-of-confidence/

The added benefit? You’ll discover that the same things that help you alleviate fear and build confidence will also help your horse.

A couple of Groups to follow on FB for the 2025 Rose Parade are 2025 Versatile Arabians Rose Parade Group and the 2025 Rose Parade Prep. If you want to know more about the riders and walkers as well as the Groups sponsors, the first one is the place to go. The second one will be showing (I think) what is involved with getting ready to ride in the Parade (like having to be parked on the freeway at an ungodly hour of the night - they do close down a major freeway for all of the equestrians to stage).

For the Rose Parade, you don't just show up and ride. The group, or rather Nancy Harvey, the groups Marshall, sends in an application a year out. The application lists the horses and riders at that time. Once accepted into the Parade, the group looks sponsors, as it isn't cheap to participate. There are press packets to be made, identifying gear for the horses, riders and walkers, as well as travel and stabling costs. Yesterday, (Sunday) was the Equifest at the LA Equestrian Center in Burbank, which allows all of the equestrian groups to perform in front of a huge crowd and talk about their groups. There is also a meet and greet with the horses and riders (the Arabians were popular this year). On New Years Eve, all of the horses are loaded up in their trailers and move to the freeway, to spend several hours waiting to gear up and head for the lineup. The riders sleep, eat, and wait.

The best way to watch the Parade, IMO, is on the KTLA+ streaming app (we watch it on our Roku tv). This is KTLA channel 5 in Los Angeles. That's the channel we have always watched it on since it is commercial free, shows all of the participants and gives a great explanation of all the floats, bands, equestrian groups, etc. It is also located just past the Orange Grove & Colorado Blvd. intersection, which is fun to watch the floats and bands negotiate. As a side note, the KTLA booth is set up in front of the Norton Simon Museum, which is where the Cal Poly group sits (GO Cal Poly - my alma mater and home of the Kellogg Arabian Horse Center).

As we await results and feedback from week one, we thought this funny dressage scribe guide would help you all decipher the judge's feedback 😀 🤣

Let's hope none of our riders got the 'Try piano 🎹 lessons' emoji 😉 🤦‍♀️
