Guns 'n Hoses Wichita Fans,

The Wichita Crime Commission board of directors has voted to suspend its Guns ’n Hoses Wichita boxing tournament. The board did not reach this decision without a great deal of consideration and deliberation.

There are two reasons for the decision.

First, relationships with the boxing sanctioning and officiating organizations are more challenging now than in the past. Second, our ability to grow the tournament and, therefore, generate support for our charities has become more problematic within the context of the staff time required to produce the event.

Since we are still in favor of the Guns ’n Hoses concept, it’s possible there may come a day when we can hold another boxing tournament, or hold other types of competitive events to spotlight the athletic skills of our G&H athletes. If the Crime Commission board of directors identifies such events, we’ll be back in touch with you.

Meanwhile, thank you very much for your great support of Guns ’n Hoses WIchita. We literally could not have done it without you!

There's some unfortunate news we need to share with you folks.

The St. Louis Guns 'n Hoses event for this month has been postponed until next year. It appears the riots and other disturbances in the St. Louis suburb or Ferguson, Missouri and nearby towns have caused area law enforcement officers to work long and extended shifts over the last few months to the point where many of them have not been able to train for G&H which is always held the night before Thanksgiving Day.

In addition, officers in the area may be called to duty to handle protests after a local grand jury decides whether or not to indict Off. Darren Wilson following the Aug. 9th shooting of Michael Brown.

You can read more about the postponement in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch online article below.

Today the Wichita Crime Commission renamed its annual Make Good Choices golf tournament after the late Ken Landwehr. Kenny was an avid golfer who played in the tournament each year since it began in 2010. Kenny commanded the Wichita Police Department's Homicide Section for twenty years, and was the lead investigator on and the officer who personally arrested BTK serial killer Dennis Rader. Kenny is missed by his law enforcement family.

Here's the news release about the tournament:

** Crime Commission renames tournament after homicide investigator**

The Wichita Crime Commission today renamed its Make Good Choices golf tournament after late Wichita Police homicide lieutenant Ken Landwehr.
“This year and in the future, the tournament will be known as the Ken Landwehr Make Good Choices Golf Tournament,” said Crime Commission Executive Director Gordon Bassham.
“Kenny played in our tournaments when we first began holding them in 2010. He loved golf and looked forward to playing in the tournament each year.
“In addition, Kenny was a big believer in the Crime Commission’s Make Good Choices program and our other youth-focused crime prevention projects,” Bassham said.
Make Good Choices today works with area school resources officers who lead field trips for high school students to area prisons. There, the young people meet with specially trained inmates who are a part of the Reaching Out from Within program. During the visits the inmates talk with the students about how their incarceration began by making bad life decisions when they were young.
“The talks between these youngsters and the inmates are very powerful,” said Bassham. “You can literally see the wheels turning as they process their conversations with the inmates.”
The Ken Landwehr Make Good Choices Golf Tournament takes place at Terradyne Country Club on Monday, September 15, 2014. Those interested in playing should contact the Crime Commission at 316-267-1235, or at [email protected]. Teams and players also can register online at www.WichitaCrimeCommission.org and visiting the golf tournament page at the Projects & Programs link.
The Wichita Crime Commission is a non-profit organization made up of business and civic leaders who work proactively with law enforcement to fight crime, and to ensure the profession maintains the community’s expectations of high ethical conduct.
