REDBUD TRAIL: ADDITIONAL CONTEXT
We've heard the questions and concerns about the cost of the Redbud Trail project, and we think they deserve thoughtful consideration.
Here's what we understand:
The Rock Road crossing is a significant safety gap on a well-used section of the Redbud Trail. Because of the amount and speed of traffic on Rock Road, we believe a grade-separated bridge is the best way to create a safer, continuous connection for people walking, biking, and rolling.
We also understand there has been confusion surrounding the project's cost and funding. The approximately $17.8 million figure being discussed represents authorization for the larger Redbud improvement project, not the cost of the bridge alone.
City staff is expected to provide City Council with a more detailed explanation of the project's scope, costs, and funding at Tuesday's meeting.
Public infrastructure deserves thoughtful scrutiny, and asking questions about cost is appropriate. Based on the information available to us, we continue to support accepting the federal funding and moving forward with the Redbud Trail bridge as planned.
