Please read and share! We need all animal supporters to voice their concerns over this proposed change!
To all of our FB friends, family and animal lovers-
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!
Wichita has a battle ahead and we need your voices, your heart and your persistence. The city council will be discussing an issue on Tuesday that impact everyone- pet owner or not.
The city has plans to cut $400,000 from the Animal Control budget. They are going to make that cut "no matter what." Their initial intention is to cut Animal Control Officer positions (at least 3), cut a Supervisor position, and decrease the facility/animal care cleaning staff by half. The end result and their "solution" to meet this budget need is to 1) stop picking up stray/feral cats and 2) stop allowing the public to drop off stray/lost animals they have found.
This means if your pet were found running by a good Samaritan, there would be no centralized location for that animal to be taken so you can locate it. These animals will be left to reunion attempts via social media, Craigslist or sent directly to rescues. The chances of you finding your pet will be quite low. Even vet clinics, like us, do not have the capacity to hold onto lost pets until owners are found!
Additionally, the public health consequences of this change are huge. Increases in animal bites, potential rabies exposures, parasitic diseases, and other zoonotic diseases are all likely outcomes.
When asked what they expect to happen, they stated they "hope the Kansas Humane Society and local rescues will just take them instead." So, a local non-profit who already adopts out over 13,000 animals a year (with over a 90% save rate), will now have to find the space, budget, medical care and additional staff, to bring in an additional 5,000-6,000 animals?! (Yes, Wichita Animal Shelter takes in over 5000 animals a year from the public -> which means over 5,000 animals found on the streets have no place to be taken).
There are MUCH better money saving measures WAS can take than to just stop being available for the Wichita community. Perhaps they limit the amount of time pets are held there for a reunion- microchipped or not, tagged by rescues or not. They can charge fees for rescues each time they pull a pet. Rescues put a lot into finding these animals homes and they charge fees to adopt them out, but this can't fall just on rescues! The city can accept previously offered proposals take over the care of the pets in their facility by outside organizations! Or, the city can just understand that this service is truly a priority for a safe community and figure out other areas of their budget that can be cut without the negative affects that this will have.
Please, contact your city council members and the mayor to express your concerns. This is unacceptable and a terrible way to save money. The veterinary community's voice will be heard at their meeting on Tuesday. Your voices can be heard every day until then.
Please help us and help our community.
