Many people are interested in supporting children in foster care, but misconceptions about what it means to be a CASA volunteer often hold them back. Let’s clear up a few of the most common myths.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "You need a background in law or social work."
𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: CASA volunteers come from all walks of life. We provide all the training you need.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "It's a full-time commitment."
𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: Most volunteers spend about 8–12 hours a month advocating for their assigned child (which includes one visit per month and attending all court cases).

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "You have to navigate the system alone."
𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: CASA volunteers are supported every step of the way by staff, supervisors, and ongoing training.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "I'm not sure I'm qualified."
𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: If you can listen, show up consistently, and care about a child’s well‑being, you already have the qualities that matter most.

𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: "This makes me a mentor."
𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: A mentor focuses on quality time and connection. Advocates, on the other hand, help ensure the child's needs are being met and their rights are protected within the court.

Understanding the role is the first step toward understanding CASA’s impact. The more our community knows, the more children in foster care can receive the advocacy they deserve.

When a child enters foster care, the process can feel overwhelming. A CASA volunteer helps bring clarity and consistency to that journey.

Here's a simple look at what a CASA case typically involves:

1️⃣Assignment
▪️A judge appoints a CASA volunteer to advocate for a child who has experienced abuse or neglect.

2️⃣Getting to Know the Child
▪️The volunteer spends time with the child, listens to their experiences, and learns what they need to feel safe and supported.

3️⃣Gathering Information
▪️They connect with caregivers, teachers, caseworkers, and others involved in the child’s life to understand the full picture.

4️⃣Monitoring Progress
▪️Throughout the case, the volunteer checks in regularly, tracking school, health, emotional well‑being, and any changes in the child’s environment.

5️⃣Making Recommendations
▪️The volunteer provides the court with clear, child‑centered insights to help guide decisions about safety, services, and permanency.

6️⃣Supporting Stability
▪️From start to finish, the CASA volunteer remains a steady presence, helping ensure the child’s voice is heard at every step.

Every case is unique, but the goal is always the same: to help a child find safety, stability, and a path forward.

This is the heart of CASA’s work and the reason volunteers make such a meaningful difference.

For a child in foster care, change can feel constant: new homes, new schools, new adults, new expectations. In the middle of all that uncertainty, one steady relationship can make an extraordinary difference.

That’s why consistency is at the heart of CASA’s work.

A CASA volunteer is often the one person who remains the same throughout a child’s case. They show up month after month, listen without judgment, and help ensure the child’s needs don’t get lost in the shuffle.

Consistency matters because:
1️⃣It builds trust — children open up when someone keeps showing up
2️⃣It creates stability — even small routines can help a child feel grounded
3️⃣It strengthens advocacy — the better a volunteer knows the child, the clearer their voice becomes in court
4️⃣It supports healing — reliable relationships help children feel safe again

When a child knows someone is in their corner and that they'll keep showing up, everything changes.

Many people hear “CASA volunteer” and imagine they need a legal background or years of experience working with children. The truth is much simpler, and much more human.

A CASA volunteer is a trained community member who shows up consistently for a child in foster care. They get to know the child, listen to their experiences, and advocate for what’s in their best interest.

Here's what that looks like in real life:
🔷Building trust: spending time with the child, learning their needs, strengths, and hopes
🔷Collaborating: talking with caregivers, teachers, caseworkers, and others involved in the child’s life
🔷Observing progress: checking in on school, health, and emotional well‑being
🔷Providing clarity: helping the court understand what the child needs to be safe and supported
🔷Being consistent: showing up month after month, even when everything else in the child’s world is changing

CASA volunteers are not foster parents. They’re not social workers. They're steady, caring advocates who help ensure a child’s voice is heard.

We hope this gives you a clearer picture of the heart behind this work and the difference one committed adult can make.

Every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported, especially those navigating the uncertainty of foster care. That’s where CASA of Sedgwick County comes in.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) trains everyday people to stand beside children in foster care and advocate for their best interests in court.

We’re here to make sure no child moves through the system alone and that their voice is never lost in the process.

As we begin sharing more about our work, we invite you to learn with us, connect with our mission, and discover the impact one advocate can make in a child’s life.

Because every child deserves someone in their corner.
