– Honoring a Scottish Rite Brother Who Helped Build Wichita’s Legacy
Today we look back on the life of James R. Mead (1836–1910), one of the early pioneers and founding figures of Wichita, Kansas.
A plainsman, trader, businessman, legislator, and historian, James R. Mead established a trading post near the mouth of the Little Arkansas River in 1864, helping lay the foundation for the city of Wichita. He played an important role in the city’s early development, including supporting its incorporation, preserving the history of the region, and helping bring the railroad to Wichita in 1871.
Beyond his contributions to the growth of our city and state, James R. Mead was also a Brother of Elmo Lodge of Perfection No. 9, Wichita Valley Scottish Rite, as shown by this 1903 membership receipt.
The Wichita Scottish Rite is proud to honor Brother James R. Mead and remember his lasting contributions to our community, our history, and the generations who followed.
