Unified Fitness Challenge

Created by the Special Olympics of Kansas, which was established in 1970. The goal of the challenge itself is to increase active participation in family, friends, and teams to work toward healthy lifestyles. "Special Olympics Kansas has grown providing a quality, year-round program of athletic training, health education, and competition opportunities to more than 5,400 athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state of Kansas" Source: (https://ksso.org/overview/history/)

A member of our team is a participant in the Unified Fitness challenge & connected with a host to find a way for our team to host an event that would help create an opportunity for participants.

One measurable outcome:

Our goal partnering with the Unified Fitness Challenge & SOKS is to increase participation by providing an opportunity for students to log fitness hours & help encourage athletic opportunities among their members.

Values:

This event aligns with the values of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion as it raises awareness and support for SOKS which provides both athletic and leadership opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilites. The challenge also aligns with health and wellness as it not only supports SOKS but members of the Unified Fitness Challenge at WSU are able to count this event towards their hours that are logged for the partnership with SOKS promoting fitness and participation.
