Wibaux, Montana (pronounced WEE-bow) is a cattle ranching town out in Wibaux County, just west of the border with North Dakota. The town is named for French rancher Pierre Wibaux, who arrived in Montana in 1884. He would save up enough money to buy the land of less-fortunate ranchers after the winter of 1886. In 1884, Theodore Roosevelt had an altercation with a drunken sheep herder in Nolan’s Hotel in Wibaux, where he was held at gunpoint before promptly punching his attacker three times and leaving the other hotel guests to drag the man out to a shed!
