The OETT took part in the 2nd annual American Cancer Society Big Dig Inland Empire on Saturday March 7th. It was a great event promoting all the work done by the Cancer Society. Our instructors and coordinators helped the kids enjoy their time on the mini excavators. The event was attended by Business Manager Ron Sikorski.

Our Training Trust family lost one of its favorite sons this past Wednesday, January 29th. Rene Castellanos past away at UCLA Medical Center, due to complications related to a lung transplant. His 36 year membership in Local 12 began with his apprenticeship in January of 1984, becoming a Journeyman January 1st 1987. Rene worked as a mechanic in the Dirt Industry for Ebenstiener, Sukut, Skanska, and Yeager. In February of 1996 he was hired by Director, Bert Tolbert as an Instructor and mechanic for the Training Trust where he spent the next 24 years. During that time he served in the field at March AFB, Moreno Valley, and the Rincon site in San Diego. He instructed Mechanic apprentices in all subjects including welding and fabrication. In addition to those classes he taught Hazmat and OSHA 10. In January of 2014 he was promoted by Director of Training, Larry Hopkins, to Apprentice Coordinator for District 5 in Redlands. In March 2016 Rene took over the responsibilities of Equipment Superintendent working out of the Whittier shop. He will be greatly missed by the hundreds of apprentices he influenced, and all of us lucky enough to have worked next to him. Rene is survived by his wife Priscilla, and his daughter Brittney.
