The October Judaculla’s Kids Conservation Club meeting focused on Gadugi, working together for the good of the community!
Students visited the Yellowhill Community Club to clean garden beds and plant a cover crop to support soil health and prepare for spring. They also took part in social dances and heard the Cherokee story “Daughter of the Sun.”
Sgi to the North Carolina Arboretum and the Museum of the Cherokee People’s Cultural Education Program for sharing their knowledge and cultural teachings with our students!

We had a wonderful time at our September Mothers Gathering, where we focused on harmony in parenting and explored how a little organization can bring more peace and consistency into our busy lives!
Shelby Parker shared practical ideas for establishing routines, staying organized, and using simple tools like checklists to make everyday life feel a little more manageable.
Everyone also went home with a planner and pens to help put some of these ideas into practice!
A big Sgi to everyone who joined us and helped make this gathering so meaningful. We hope to see you at our next Mothers Gathering on October 20.

Day two of Rooted in the Mountains brought together powerful stories of community care, knowledge sharing, and intergenerational stewardship.
We heard from Katsi Cook, Beverly Cook, and Shirelle Jacobs of Akwesasne as they shared about their work in their communities, including midwifery and Beverly’s work creating a Centering Pregnancy program.
We also heard from members of Judaculla’s Kids, who shared their experiences and the importance of teaching and carrying stewardship forward across generations.
Sgi to everyone who came out and helped make this gathering so meaningful. A special Sgi to Lisa Lefler, PhD, organizer of Rooted in the Mountains and a founder of The Center for Native Health. We appreciate everything you do for the community!

We had a wonderful evening celebrating the two-year anniversary of the name change back to Kuwohi!
Councilwomen Lavita Hill and Shennelle Feather, along with community members, shared beautiful stories and reflections about Kuwohi’s history and the traditional activities that have taken place there.
Kuwohi is a truly special and unique place for the EBCI community, connected to history, culture, and traditions. The Center for Native Health is honored to be trusted to support and be part of such a meaningful celebration!
A heartfelt Sgi to the Kuwohi Planning Team- The Center for Native Health, Museum of the Cherokee People, Tribal Council, and the National Park Service, as well as the EBCI community, Coche Tiger, and Jarrett Wildcat, for helping make this celebration such a wonderful success!
We are grateful for the opportunity to come together, honor the past, celebrate the present, and carry the story of Kuwohi forward for future generations!

On day two of Kuwohi Connection, September 15, the Educational Team welcomed fifth-grade students from Swain and Smoky Mountain Elementary Schools for another day of place-based learning.
The day began with Nancy Pheasant sharing the Cherokee story of Medicine Lake and Bear Council. Students then explored Cherokee culture and traditions through interactive educational stations, with each table offering opportunities to learn from knowledge and experiences connected to Cherokee core values.
It was another beautiful day of connecting students with Cherokee stories, traditions, values, and the land.
A big Sgi to the Kuwohi Connection Planning Team for bringing everyone together and making another meaningful day of learning, connection, and community possible!

A misty fog hung over Kuwohi (Mulberry Place) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the morning of Taline Iga (Tuesday), Duliisdi (Sept.) 15 as area students attended Kuwohi Connection Day.

On Thursday, September 3rd, CNH hosted our “Voices for Land, Climate, and Resources Gathering” at Lake Junsluska Conference and Retreat Center. The gathering brought together EBCI land trust partners, NC State University climate experts, EBCI Natural Resource Department, and other important EBCI partners working in land stewardship and cultural preservation. Attendees discussed how climate change is impacting traditional artisan resources, learned about current efforts to protect these resources, and explored new initiatives to address future climate risk factors. We would like to thank all those who joined and extend our appreciation to our funders First Nations Development Institute, the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for their support around these efforts!

Last Thursday, September 10, we held our first Kuwohi Connection Days event of the year! Kuwohi Days gives students the opportunity to visit Kuwohi and learn about its historical and cultural significance.
The event also creates space for intergenerational knowledge sharing, with CHS students teaching fifth grade students traditional Cherokee stories and dances.
Sgi to our partners, NPS, Community Club Council, The Wilderness Society, Museum of the Cherokee People, EBCI Cooperative Extension, and to all of our presenters, Nancy Pheasant, Dadiwonisi, CLMAP, MotCP, CCS LifeCamp, Amber Allen, and EBCI Cooperative Extension. Sgi to everyone who helped make this event possible!

On Tuesday, September 8, we held our second Judaculla’s Kids Club meeting! During our gathering, we learned about bull nettle with Kelly Murphy and heard Kathi Littlejohn share the story of the origin of medicine and ginseng.
We were also happy to have Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) join us for a series of stations. Students taste tested microgreens and used different ingredients to create their own garden plots, planted their own microgreens, and played a veggie bingo game!
