Chorale Bel Canto Guild

Chorale Bel Canto Guild We support Chorale Bel Canto, a Whittier-based Master Chorale of ~80 singers, at concerts and community events. The Chorale is affiliated with Chorus America.

Chorale Bel Canto was founded in 1982 by a group of Whittier College Choir Alumni who wished to continue singing after graduating. Director of Choral Activities Stephen Gothold, himself an alumnus, organized the recruiting efforts and the Chorale made its debut performance on Saturday, December 4, 1982 at the Whittier Presbyterian Church - a performance of Handel’s complete The Messiah. Since then

, the Chorale has sung over one hundred thirty concert programs in the Southern California area. The Chorale performed in Japan in 1994 and at the Hollywood Bowl in 1995 as it joined together with 1,000 singers from America and Japan to sing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. In 2001, members of the Chorale -- along with Whittier College students, alumni, and members of the Imperial Valley Choral Society -- toured Eastern Europe and performed selections of American hymns, spirituals, and sacred songs. Chorale members have also participated in the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, a tour of Eastern Europe with Mozart’s Requiem, and, most recently, the summer of 2011 in Italy with the glorious Requiem of Giuseppe Verdi. After Dr. Gothold's passing, "right arm" from the beginning, Linda Brown, became the interim director for a time. The Chorale is thrilled that Dr. Brown was selected shortly thereafter as the permanent Music Director off Chorale Bel Canto. The Chorale welcomes new singers throughout the year, interested singers should contact Dr. Brown via the website links. All singers are volunteers, and come from all walks of life. Chorale Bel Canto is a not-for-profit educational organization, chartered by the Internal Revenue Service. It is supported by the Los Angeles County Arts Council, private foundations, and individual donors. Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 and died in 1750. He was a composer, but was more well-known as an organist in the late Baroque period. Bach believed writing music, both sacred and secular, was an expression of faith. He influenced composers and musicians for centuries. Johannes Brahms said: “Study Bach: there you will find everything.”

Happy Birthday Johann Sebastian Bach!

Chorale Bel Canto Memories

Celebrating 40 Fabulous Seasons!

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the members of Chorale Bel Canto were not able to meet in person to rehearse or perform in 2020. The members of the group stayed connected by weekly Zoom calls. During these calls, members practiced their sight-singing skills and learned about some of the greatest pieces of music and the composers who created them!

I was a latecomer, but missed only the first concert. My first concert and first Bach, first German language attempt... successful, I might add. Steve was a superior instructor.
I may still have been in Whittier and a member of CBC, had it not been for the Whittier Narrows Earthquake! At least, I'm back in my home state of Texas.

Those of us who met in the summer of 1982 to establish a “masterworks chorale” in the Whittier area, had big dreams of presenting beautiful choral music. Those dreams have come true, and here we are all these years later, still performing! There are so many people who have been a part of this dream over the years…from our directors, our singers and our audience members/supporters.

In the coming months we will celebrate our 40th season by sharing great music, along with great memories! Please share your memories of Chorale Bel Canto!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Austria and died in 1791 at the age of 35. He is known as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western Music. His catalog of works includes operas, symphonies, choral music and so much more. At one point, he completed three symphonies, (No. 39 in E-flat Major, No. 40 in G Minor, and No. 41 in C Major) within 6 weeks during the summer of 1788, a remarkable feat even for him!
