Its purpose is to promote the common good of its residents, and preserve the historic integrity and natural resources of the area by developing a sense of community pride and civic betterment. The Whittier Historic Neighborhood Association (WHNA) is a not-for-profit organization within the historic Uptown area of Whittier, California. It was formed after a small group of residents gathered togethe
r in the fall of 1997 to explore ways to improve and protect their neighborhood. Its purpose is to promote the common good and general welfare of residents living within its boundaries, and to preserve the historic integrity and natural resources of the surrounding area by developing a sense of community pride and civic betterment. WHNA is a non-profit, tax exempt organization under section 501(C)(3). Donations and membership dues are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Any revenue generated is devoted to neighborhood improvement projects and other activities that support the organization’s purpose. OUR CONTRIBUTIONS
The organization has contributed to bettering the neighborhood by maintaining a strong presence and relationship with the City of Whittier, as well as networking with other non-profit organizations that impact Uptown; contributing money to upgrade the trees the City replanted along our streets; paying for the 19 “Historic District” signs located throughout our boundaries; and designing, building, installing and landscaping the iconic “Whittier Historic District” stone monuments that mark Central Park and the major entrance points to our neighborhood. Additionally, WHNA continuously makes contributions to various local organizations including Hoover Elementary, Whittier Public Library, Whittier Museum, the American Red Cross, and the Women and Children’s Crisis Center. We are currently beginning a project to increase safety by improving the lighting in our alleyways, and have plans to create a database of home improvement resources for historic and vintage buildings. WHAT WE DO
WHNA has recruited Block Captains on all the blocks within its boundaries, it holds neighborhood meetings covering a wide range of informative and helpful topics, publishes a free Neighborhood Newsletter that is distributed to all residences within its boundaries multiple times each year, welcomes new neighbors, recognizes residents who improve the exterior of their homes, sponsors a variety of neighborhood events, including social get-togethers and picnics, home tour events, holiday decorating contests, safety awareness gatherings, neighborhood clean-up events and annual yard sales.
