🚨 POTENTIAL HISTORIC SNOWSTORM SIGNAL ON THE MAPS 🚨❄️ FRIDAY THRU SUNDAY ☃️

The latest 12Z GFS model is showing a very aggressive snowfall signal across parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic as we head toward late next week into early February. Some model projections are even hinting at 1–3 FEET of snow in portions of the southern Appalachians and surrounding regions.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: This is NOT A FORECAST — this is strictly long-range model guidance. Exact placement and snowfall totals will change. Stay aware and be prepared for potential changes ahead….

Snow and ice from Winter Storm Fern are creating hazardous conditions across our service area, impacting trees and power lines.

At this time, approximately 11,000 members are without power. Our crews are actively responding and will work as safely and as quickly as possible to restore service as conditions allow. Please note that icy roads and hazardous weather may slow restoration efforts.

Cold Weather & Electrical Safety Tips:
• Stay away from any downed power lines and report them immediately
• Never use generators, grills, or propane heaters indoors
• Dress in layers and check on elderly neighbors and family members
• If using candles, never leave them unattended

If you experience an outage, reporting it through SmartHub is the easiest way to do so. Please limit travel if possible, and thank you for your patience as we work through this storm.

🚗 Before You Hit the Road
1. Check Your Vehicle:
• Make sure your tires have good tread (consider snow tires or all-weather tires).
• Keep wiper blades, brake fluid, and antifreeze topped up.
• Ensure your battery is in good condition — cold weather drains it faster.
• Clean headlights and taillights for maximum visibility.
2. Pack an Emergency Kit:
Include:
• Blanket or extra warm clothing
• Ice scraper and snow brush
• Flashlight and batteries
• Jumper cables
• Small shovel and sand/kitty litter (for traction)
• Water and snacks
• First aid kit
• Phone charger
3. Plan Ahead:
• Check the weather forecast and road conditions before leaving.
• Let someone know your route and estimated arrival time.

🛞 While Driving
1. Slow Down:
• Speed limits are for ideal conditions — reduce speed on snow or ice.
2. Increase Following Distance:
• Keep at least 8–10 seconds between you and the car ahead.
3. Brake Gently:
• Avoid slamming on the brakes; apply steady pressure to prevent skidding.
4. Steer Smoothly:
• Sudden movements can cause you to lose control.
• If you start to skid, steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go.
5. Avoid Cruise Control:
• It can cause wheels to spin if traction is lost.
6. Use Low Beams in Snow or Fog:
• High beams can reflect off snow and reduce visibility.

🧊 If You Get Stuck
• Don’t spin your tires — it’ll dig you in deeper.
• Try rocking the car gently (forward and backward) to gain traction.
• Use sand, cat litter, or floor mats under your tires for grip.
• Stay with your vehicle if stranded and run the engine occasionally to stay warm — but ensure the exhaust pipe is clear of snow.
