It's difficult to find the words to express just how much this man will be missed. Very few people cared so deeply or gave so much of themselves to the Berks County Aquatic community. Thanks to the generosity of the Deren Family, his legacy will live on through the annual scholarship awards, the Ed Deren Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Inductee #8 – Can you name this talented athlete and trailblazing supporter of Berks County Water Polo?

I was a water polo player and swimmer for Wilson HS in the early 1980’s earning Honorable Mention All-American status in polo in 1981. My water polo team at Slippery Rock won 2 Eastern regionals and finished in the top 8 at NCAA division 1 playoffs. I was one of the founding fathers of Kingfish Water Polo where I served as CEO and treasurer. I’ve played, coached and officiated Kingfish water polo games since its inception. As such, I was instrumental in the development of many former, current, and future Berks County water polo players.

I was a standout swimmer and water polo player for Reading High in the early 1980s. I was a leading contributor when the Red Knights won 2 Central Penn and one district team championship. In water polo, I was team captain, team MVP, and a NISCA All American. I had a great career at Slippery Rock University where I was team captain, a three-year starter, and a three-time D-1 Middle Atlantic first team selection. I competed for Water Polo clubs in national tournaments and coached in the AWP Eastern League and the Main Line League until age 49. I was the Governor Mifflin head coach for 10 years, winning the state team title in 1997 and I was named PA Coach of the year in 1993. For many years I was one of top Water Polo officials in the state and worked many state championship games.

Inductee #6 – This guy!

When I graduated from Wilson, I had accumulated one of the most outstanding all-around careers in Bulldog history. At the end of my senior season, I held records in 6 of the 11 swim events and five are still standing today. My times in the IM (1:47.65) and the 100 back (48.37) were both the fifth fastest HS times in the nation that year. I was a 3-time state champ and my medley relay set a state record. I was also a first team selection for PA Water Polo in 2010 and a leading member of 2 Wilson state champion Water Polo teams. My collegiate career at Penn State was equally memorable. I was a 5 time Division 1 All-American and a 7-time Honorable Mention All-American. I held 3 PSU records. I was Big 10 Freshman of the Year and Big 10 first team. I was also an academic All-Big 10, an Olympic trials qualifier, and 3-time team MVP.

Inductee #5 – Can you name this legendary coach, mentor, and friend to Berks County Aquatics?

I’ve impacted the lives of countless swimmers across Berks County by teaching them to swim at a young age and developing a strong foundation in stroke technique that would carry them through their age group, high school, club, and college careers. My amazing career began in the mid 1970’s when I was instrumental in building youth programs at the Reading Y, Bern Township pool, Reading School District, Antietam pool, and the Schuylkill Valley School District. Under my leadership as the head age group coach from 1984-1994, the SV high school team grew from 45 to 110 swimmers. I continue to foster a love of swimming, teaching children to be water safe and improving their technique.

I graduated from Reading High where I was an outstanding swimmer and water polo player. I was a RHS All state swimmer and water polo player for 4 years and coached the College Manor summer team for 4 years. I had an outstanding collegiate career at Clarion where I was a 12-time NCAA swimming and 3 x Academic All-American. I am currently the head coach of men’s and women’s swimming at Clarion University. I was the first female coach to receive the PSAC Coach of the Year award and I was the Men’s Coach of the Year in 2023. Under my leadership, Clarion was 3rd in the nation (D-2) with a combined team GPA of 3.70.
