Columbus County Emergency Services is monitoring the potential for dangerous heat across our area this holiday weekend. The National Weather Service is forecasting heat of possibly 105° or higher, with the hottest conditions expected through the weekend.

To help residents stay safe, Columbus County is sponsoring hydration stations with free bottles of water at the following locations:

Today we remember: The Charleston Sofa Super Store fire was a firefighting accident that occurred on the evening of June 18, 2007, in Charleston, South Carolina, resulting in the deaths of nine firefighters. It was the deadliest firefighter disaster in the US since the September 11 attacks. The fire, which started in the loading dock of the furniture store, rapidly spread to the main showroom and warehouse, leading to a catastrophic structural collapse. Despite initial firefighting efforts and rescue attempts, the poor water supply and lack of fire sprinkler systems contributed to the incident.

🚒 HISTORIC WIN FOR WILMINGTON FIREFIGHTERS 🚒

Tonight, the City of Wilmington officially approved a budget that includes a living wage for Wilmington firefighters.

For years, firefighters have served this city with pride while many struggled to afford the community they protect. With the approval of this budget, a firefighter’s starting salary after completing the academy will increase to over $58,000, marking a major step forward in recruiting, retaining, and supporting the dedicated men and women who answer the call every day.

This budget also includes funding for Mission Ready gear, helping ensure firefighters have the equipment they need to safely and effectively serve our community.

This is more than a pay increase, it’s an investment in public safety, our firefighters, and their families. It’s a recognition of the sacrifices made every day and a commitment to building a stronger fire department for the future.

Thank you to the City Manager, Mayor, City Council, city staff, and everyone who supported this effort. This is a historic moment for Wilmington Firefighters and a victory that will impact our department for generations to come.

Sawmill Apartments Fire 6/5/26 - Arriving at a working structure fire with only a two/three person crew creates an immediate, catastrophic threat to both occupants and firefighters. It forces personnel to bypass safety protocols, significantly delays rescue and water application, and severely increases the risk of rapid fire spread and fatalities.
At this particular fire, the arriving firefighters strenuously performed an initial attack with no back up crew for their own safety. Fortunately all the occupants were out, because the primary search was delayed.. On the bright side some off duty personnel arrived on scene shortly after. Also several county departments assisted with operations.. But that first few minutes could mean life or death! SUPPORT your local fire department and firefighters.. They are here for you.. Its tax dollars well spent..
