Today, the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department mourns the loss of Safety Officer/Firefighter John Kuhn, a man who dedicated more than 41 years of his life to the fire service and to serving the communities he called home.

John’s fire service journey began in June 1985, when he joined the Genesee Volunteer Fire Department as a Junior Member. Upon turning 18, he became a senior member and continued serving Genesee until June 1992. From June 1992 through October 2009, John served with the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department. In October 2009, he returned to Genesee, where he continued serving until November 2023. In November 2023, John returned once again to Whitesville, where he remained an active member until his passing in October 2026.

His years of service weren't simply about belonging to a department. They followed the different chapters of his family's life — supporting his loving wife, Teresa, moving his family to a new home, Wherever life took John, the fire service remained a constant

During his years with the Genesee Volunteer Fire Department, John served in numerous leadership positions, including: Captain, 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, 3rd Assistant Chief, Head Chief, Chairman of the Board, Board Member, President, Safety Officer.

During his years with the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department, John served as: President, Vice President, Commissioner, Safety Officer

John was also a Life Member of the Allegany County Firemen's Association and a member of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York.

But titles only tell part of John's story.
Those who served alongside him knew the firefighter, the leader, the friend, and the man who continued answering the call for more than four decades. His commitment to the fire service spanned generations, departments, homes, and countless calls.

John's return to Whitesville in 2023 brought him back to a department and a community where he had already given so much. He continued to serve as Safety Officer and Vice President, bringing with him decades of experience, knowledge, and dedication.

His legacy will not end with his passing. It lives on in the members who served beside him, in the firefighters he helped lead, and in the generations of volunteers who will continue answering the call.
The Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to Teresa, John's family, friends, and all of those who had the privilege of calling him a brother firefighter.

More than 41 years of service, sacrifice, leadership, and dedication.

Rest easy, John.
We'll take it from here. 🚒🖤

September 11, 2001. We Remember.

Twenty-five years later, the events of September 11 remain a defining moment in our nation's history.

Today, we remember the 2,977 people who lost their lives, the families who lost loved ones, and the countless people whose lives were forever changed.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and other first responders who ran toward danger to help others. We remember the civilians who showed extraordinary courage. And we remember the spirit of service and unity that emerged in the days that followed.

For those of us in the fire service, the sacrifices of September 11 serve as a lasting reminder of what it means to answer the call and put others before ourselves.

Tonight, Starlight Theatre Company presents 110 Stories by Sarah Tuft at the Nancy Howe Auditorium at 7:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:30.

The production is free admission, with a suggested $10 donation. All funds raised will benefit Wellsville volunteer first responder organizations.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to observe September 11, consider joining our community tonight to listen, reflect, and remember the everyday heroes whose stories deserve to be told.

We will never forget.
