The Cowan Community Action Group is excited to present the Common Grounds Community Arts Gathering on Friday, October 23rd, from 6-8pm at the Cowan Community Center. This open-mic event will showcase the incredible talents of community members from our surrounding area.

This is a family friendly gathering where all age groups are invited to perform. We encourage storytellers, poets, singers, musicians, actors/actresses, puppeteers, dancers, comedians, and visual artists to share their gifts with our community.

We want to thank everyone who attended sewing with Louise last night.

Seeing all the handmade products come to life in one evening is a gift to behold. All ages, abilities, and people working together to create makes for a beautiful intergenerational gathering.

We will see you next Tuesday between 2:00-8:00pm. Walk-ins welcome. Bring a project, or we will have one for you to work on. All materials are provided at no cost to participants. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

This week we are featuring Channing Richardson, Pick and Bow Instructor at Cowan Community Center. 🎶

Channing has been teaching all genres of music for the past seventeen years. For the past six years he has been involved in the Pick and Bow scene.

When asked his thoughts about traditional music, he responded, “People simply made this music because it felt good and because they loved doing it. It was something to do, something to share, and something that belonged to the people who made it.”
He is passionate about spreading music to as many people as he can and making it accessible to anyone who wants it.

Come out on Thursdays to Pick and Bow classes and maybe you’ll fall in love with it too. Dinner at 5:00pm. Classes at 5:30-6:30pm.

Common Threads is our weekly sewing gathering with Louise Murtaugh, where everyone is invited to come together to create, learn, share, and connect. Whether you’ve been sewing for years or have never picked up a needle and thread, there’s a place for you at the table!

Beginning Tuesday, September 29

Every Tuesday • Two time options: 2:30 PM or 5:30 PM

Each week will be a chance to learn new skills, work on projects, share what you know, enjoy good conversation, and spend time together.

Because sometimes the best things we create aren’t just what we make—they’re the connections we make along the way.

Congratulations to the Cowan Creek Youth Choir and the Galleynipper Piano Trio on a magnificent performance last night.

Our sincere thanks go to director Beverly May for curating such a beautiful program, and to Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church for providing the perfect venue.
It was a pleasure to experience repertoire from the Baroque period, spirituals, hymns, and traditional folk songs.

Thank you to everyone in the community who joined us to support and celebrate the hard work of our youth. 🙏🏼❤️🎶

October 12 is National Farmers Day!
Let’s celebrate the farmers of the East Kentucky mountains and the special places they tend: hillside hollers; creek side garden patches; high tunnels; and fields tucked between the ridges.
Farming here takes patience, hard work, and a close understanding of the land. To the farmers across our mountain communities and around the world, thank you for the food you grow, the care you give the land, and the knowledge you share with the next generation. Today, we’re grateful for you and for every piece of ground you farm.

🍂 LOCATION CHANGE! 🍂

Just for this week, our theatre workshop will take place tomorrow at Cowan Downtown (the old post office) in Whitesburg. This is so that folks have ample time in between events to attend our youth choir concert across the street at the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church if they so choose.

🎶🗓 Mark your calendars. Winter Cowan is nearly here!

Our 8-week virtual traditional music school, runs from January 4th-Feb 26th, 2027. Tickets go live November 2nd!

For the seventh year, we will offer virtual classes to keep you progressing in fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, guitar and singing. We are delighted to announce this year's courses taught by Nokosee Fields, Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Randy Wilson, Blakeley Burger, Roxanne McDaniel, and Thomas Deakin.

One-hour classes will meet weekly on Zoom in January and February. All class times are listed in US Eastern Standard Time. Tuition is $160 and scholarships are available!
