We had a great time at Cowan Community Center yesterday! We learned all about water access in Appalachia, conserving water, and how to safely explore the creek for critters! 🐸🦞🐟🦫💧

PARENTS: Here’s how you can play our water-use awareness game at home!

1. Get two large tubs and fill one with water.
2. Get a plastic or paper cup and poke a hole in the bottom of it.
3. Your kiddo(s) will try to fill the empty tub with the water from the full one.
The trick is to space them so that they have to run between tubs.
4. If there is more than one playing this game, they will pass the cup back each time.
5. By the end of the game, you will calculate how much water you saved!

Today at Cowan Community Center, kiddos accessed their ✨creativity✨ by building their own rafts! ⛵️

PARENTS:
To do this activity with your little ones, put them in the mind that they are explorers! They are traveling through the mountains and they come up on a river they must cross. As travelers they will only have with them some rope (a piece of yarn). Let them forage for their own materials and watch as their raft floats down the creek. No creek? No problem! Stop up the sink, and let the fun commence! 🍃

A collaborative poem written by all of the “kids on the creek” last Friday. ❤️

“Kindness is the best
Water cleans us
Can be used for washing hands

A resource for us to live
The world, full of happiness

Keep oceans clean
Animals won’t die
Crocodiles and turtles live there
So do snakes

Water for the gardens to grown food
And water for boats
Or cups of steaming tea

The world is the best”

It is so special to see where their minds take them and how they express such compassion and understanding for all the water around them. Cowan Community Center

Week 2 at Cowan Community Center, our AmeriCorps had the opportunity to teach kiddos about being a good watershed neighbor!

PARENTS! Here’s how you can do this at home.
1. Wrap a rubber band around a glass of water. (best to use a plastic cup) 🥤
2. Tie strings around the band, and everyone find out the best way to pick it up. 🧵
3. Use obstacles such as a playground, trees in your yard, or make your own! 🛝
4. Try to maneuver around obstacles without anyone spilling or dirtying the water. 💧
5. Each obstacle is a place in the community. For example, the tree is the hospital, 🏥 and the bushes are a construction site. 🏗️

This activity teaches the importance of teamwork and each person’s role/responsibility in the community!

It was so awesome getting to teach kiddos at Cowan Community Center all about the water in their bodies! Thank you for giving us that opportunity. 🙂

PARENTS! Teaching your littles about hydration can be fun! Try this activity:

1. Ask how much of their bodies they believe is made of water.
2. Explain that it is roughly 60%.
3. Have them lay down and trace them with chalk.
4. Let them color in what they think is 60%.
5. Assess if what they colored-in is correct. If not, help them color the correct amount!
This activity helps them visualize what 60% looks like and why we NEED so much water to survive.

Here are some tips to stay hydrated this Summer:
💧carry your water bottle with you
💧take breaks when you’re playing outside in the warm sun
💧drink water with meals
💧set reminders on your phone
💧add fruit to make it tastier

Do YOU have any ideas to remember to stay hydrated? Tell us in the comments!

Greetings! I am Debi Sexton, a life-long resident of the Letcher
County area which has been and continues to be my family’s home and where I spent the majority of my professional career teaching middle school. It was during that tenure when I began working with the University of Kentucky GoH2O project which provided filtered water-filling stations/fountains to area schools and raised an increasing awareness and concern for clean, safe drinking water. Upon retirement from teaching, I continued to work with that project serving as the Harlan County Field Director. Transitioning to the role as the Research Coordinator for a UK-community NIEHS funded research project, it is my desire to work together with officials, organizations, and concerned citizens to educate myself and others to share the responsibility on what we can do to continue the efforts to ensure the safety of our drinking and surface waters.

Last week, Headwaters had the great opportunity to participate in a retreat to meet with members of the University of Kentucky, LiKEN (Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network), Martin County Concerned Citizens, and Appalachian Citizens' Law Center. The purpose of the retreat was to discuss the beginning of the NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Sciences) project which all these organizations will be collaborating together on.

It was a nice, but almost unfamiliar, opportunity to meet others in person. We are excited about the opportunity to collaberate with other organizations, what is to come, and the difference this project will make. There will be more updates to come as there is more progress!
