Tonight we’re talking about what happens when we face loss or feel betrayed with faith. Is there such a thing as spiritual trauma? Yes, and we’re going to talk about what it is and how to heal so faith can be at the foundation of our restoration. See you at 7!

Recently we talked some about how much of Christianity in our neck of the woods has been negatively affected by distorted beliefs about things like afterlife, God’s judgment and “the end.” We talked about how the concept of judgment and how what we believe about “the end” greatly impacts how we act here and now. We’re kicking off a new series of conversations called Good Judgment to go even deeper with this. Can judgment actually be a good thing? Can it be a tool that serves to restore the world? We’re going to start with a story from the very beginning of the Bible where one brother murders. What’s that got to do with us today? What’s it got to do with “the end” and what we believe about judgment?

It’s time to have a reboot with “judgment” and “the end” for the very reason these concepts have been at the roots of much of Christianity’s rotten fruit.

What we believe about “the end” greatly impacts how we live here and now. That’s why we’re pursuing a renewed understanding of the end and judgment that’s aligned with God’s goodness, love and holiness—judgment that is truly good like Jesus.

We’ve been talking about Finding and Following Jesus when Christianity doesn’t look much like Him. It takes time and effort to sort through the thoughts and feelings surrounding those ideas. And even as we do, Jesus continues to extend an invitation to us, as he did to his disciples, to leave our nets and follow Him. For the first disciples, the nets were their security. They were what they knew. They provided a livelihood. Jesus invited these individuals to follow Him. He gave them a new purpose - one that took what they knew, grew their understanding, and applied it in a new context for the kingdom. They said yes. What was in the air that helped them do that? What nets is Jesus inviting us to leave behind this morning? How is He inviting us to step out, grow our understanding, and follow Him?

If we give ourselves fully and daily to Jesus’s invitation to trust him and follow him, we can expect a dramatic, inside-out transformation that impacts how we see everything; this is because it will be like we are born again in a new household in a new kingdom, learning to talk, walk, eat, think, act like the Head of that household, like the Ruler of that kingdom.

One BIG reason Jesus is hard to find when people look at Christianity is that much of Christianity has a distorted picture of “the End”, and it greatly influences how people think about life here and now. Simply, if our picture of what “the end” or judgment doesn’t match Jesus’s, then our actions in the present will not match Jesus so much. This week, we’re talking about how it all started with God’s saying, “Let there be light,” and that is how it ends, too.

There was an idea that became very popular in Christianity, especially in the last 500 years (not as much in the first 1500 years of its history): saved by faith alone. You may not care much about this idea, but it has had a significant impact on the Christianity that you and I have often experienced: a Christianity that’s mostly (only?) about what you say you believe which determines where you go after you die.
