FROM BOMBS IN UKRAINE, TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY IN ROMANIA. Last week a group of Ukrainian mothers and children crossed the border into Romania. Ukrainian women and children are usually and understandably scared and hesitant as they enter a foreign country, with a different language, culture, system, and to be dependent for their needs on total strangers.
Our Romanian partners welcomed them at the border. An observant Romanian noticed the birth date of one of the children in his document. The child would turn four in a couple of days. The Romanians began to plan a surprise birthday party for the boy. None of their new Ukrainian guests knew about the party. They were told they were going to dinner at a restaurant. As they entered the room, a special Ukrainian birthday song was playing. They were all surprised and the child's birthday was celebrated with joy. The Ukrainian mom was very touched by the kindness shown to her son.
These thoughtful acts of kindness help Ukrainian mothers feel safer and at ease in the land where they are temporarily staying. Our Romanian partner, Avram Gal, New Life International Evangelical Association explains why they do such things, “Ukrainians are now part of our families, so we need to treat them as such."
