Montana Kayak Academy provides a series of free, introductory instructional clinics for Flathead Youth between the ages of 8-18 with an emphasis on fundamental whitewater skills and river etiquette. It is our mission to offer quality educational opportunities taught by certif

ied ACA (American Canoe Association) instructors with help from local volunteers. We realize that kayaking can be an expensive endeavor for a parent to outfit their child in proper equipment. For this reason, we have established a platform to provide equipment and gear necessary to attain the knowledge and proficiency in order to enjoy the sport. We look forward with great anticipation and excitement to the future of this organization and the chance to share our dream.

Join us for a women’s clinic June 22-24! Monday at 4pm to Wednesday at 8pm, our Women’s Specific Intro to Kayaking program is great for any lady interested in whitewater kayaking. We begin our 3-day course in calm, flat water and progress to moving water and eddy lines. Start by learning all about the kayak and equipment, then get comfortable with the wet exit, paddle strokes, and water dynamics. Limited to 10 people per program.

From expert whitewater runs and epic sea kayaking journeys to powerful environmental stories, SUP expeditions, and grueling kayak fishing battles, this year’s lineup celebrates paddling culture and river stewardship from around the globe.

Happy Earth Day from MKA 🌎

We’re lucky to spend our time on places like the Flathead River, and we don’t take that lightly. At Montana Kayak Academy, being on the water goes hand in hand with taking care of it.

This year, we continue to celebrate 50 years of our Wild & Scenic River designation, the biggest protection for our local rivers.

In 1976, Congress designated 219 miles of the Flathead (North, Middle, and South Forks) as part of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System

This protects the river’s free-flowing condition, meaning:

No dams or major diversions
No projects that would harm its natural character

It also protects key values like:
Water quality
Wildlife habitat (grizzly, bull trout, etc.)
Recreation + scenery

Only about 0.2% of Montana’s rivers have this level of protection. Show up, learn, and leave it better than you found it. See you on the water!
