Highlighting local women making history on International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month!

In 1985, Dr. Tina Castañares came to Hood River with a simple goal. Make healthcare available to everyone.

She opened a small private practice downtown and charged $10 per visit. No one was turned away if they could not pay.

In 1986, La Clínica del Cariño officially opened with federal funding, and Dr. Castañares served as its first physician. The clinic quickly became an important part of the community and delivered half of the area’s babies in its early years.

Her work laid the foundation for what is now One Community Health.

As we get closer to our 40th anniversary this August, we are taking time to reflect on how it all started. Women’s History Month is a chance to recognize leaders who stepped forward, saw a need, and built something that continues to serve generations.

Dr. Castañares helped change healthcare in the Gorge, and her impact is still felt today.

〰️
