Upper Valley Haven Since 1980, the Upper Valley Haven has provided temporary shelter for families and adults experiencing homelessness, as well as food for anyone in need.

The Upper Valley Haven is a private nonprofit that provides support and assistance to community members struggling with poverty in Vermont and New Hampshire. We meet people where they are, address immediate needs through food and shelter, and offer longer-term solutions that foster independence and housing stability.

Update: Our first goal was met in 43 minutes! It went so well that we’re reopening the form to cover costumes for kids staying in our family shelter too. We’re looking to raise about $350 more, and a gift of $10 or $20 goes a long way. We’ll close the form again once these are covered, and any extra will go to children’s programming at the Haven. Thank you!

We're doing Halloween costumes a little differently this year!

We asked kids at the Haven what they want to be, and the list includes the Lorax, a white cat, and a scary doctor, among other great ideas. We'd like each of them to get the one they're hoping for.

Finding those costumes in the right sizes is a lot to ask of anyone. So staff are ordering them directly, and we're looking to raise about $300 to cover the cost. A gift of $10 or $20 goes a long way. We'll close the form once the costumes are covered, and any extra will go to children's programming at the Haven.

Lori had never met Sonya before that day. Sonya put her hand over Lori's and told her she was going to get her into housing, for sure.

Lori had filled out a lot of applications by then, and no one had ever said that to her. She hadn't had a place of her own since 2012.

Cranksgiving is back for a second year on Saturday, November 14 at 10am, starting and ending at the Haven at 713 Hartford Avenue in White River Junction. cranksgiving.org/directory/event-listing/hartford-vt

Riders get a list of most-needed items, bike to local grocery stores to buy them, and bring everything back to the Haven to be weighed. Last year's ride brought in 383 pounds of food. This year there's a shorter and a longer route to choose from.

A HUGE thank you to a true partner, Willing Hands! Our fridge is being worked on today, and they gave us a safe place to keep our dairy cold until it's back up and running.

They also showed up this week with 1,092 lbs of yogurt and 600 lbs of cabbage, with help from Cabot Creamery Cooperative and Edgewater Farm. Special shout out to their drivers and warehouse staff, Tim, India, Scott, Chris, and Glen.

If you've walked through the Haven's campus this season, you've seen the flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs. That's the work of Faith and our volunteer gardeners.

Faith manages our front desk, so she's often the first person you meet at the Haven. She's also a UVM Extension master gardener, and every Saturday this season she's been out with a great crew of Dartmouth Students, retirees, and other community members. Thank you to Faith and to everyone who spent their weekends beautifying the Haven!
