Upper Valley Haven

Upper Valley Haven Since 1980, the Upper Valley Haven has provided temporary shelter for families and adults experiencing homelessness, as well as food for anyone in need.

The Upper Valley Haven is a private nonprofit that provides support and assistance to community members struggling with poverty in Vermont and New Hampshire. We meet people where they are, address immediate needs through food and shelter, and offer longer-term solutions that foster independence and housing stability.

This year, 50 runners fundraised for the Haven at the Covered Bridges Half Marathon. Some were local. Others came from New York, Texas, and beyond. The rain held off until the tail end!

We give the runners handmade Haven bracelets. Daniel has been running with us for years. At the finish line, nearly every bracelet he's ever received was still on his wrist. He added a new one yesterday.

Kent finished with his medal and a smile.

Thank you, Team Haven.

Joe shops at our Community Food Market. He described it as abundant.

The market is stocked by a network of partners across the region. The Vermont Foodbank provides dairy, meat, produce, and shelf-stable items. So do the Hanover Co-op, Hannaford, and Dan & Whit's. Willing Hands delivers recovered food from farms, grocery stores, and restaurants at no cost, year-round. Black River Produce, Montshire Packing, and Liberal Beef are local sources for eggs, produce, and meat.

These are just a few of them.

A family of four can leave with what a family of four actually needs.

"I'm not going to knock on their door," says Diana Salzinger. "I want to treat this like their home."

Diana is a Community Health Worker from Dartmouth Health, now embedded at the Haven to help guests access medical care. Through the House Calls program, a provider is also on site every Wednesday. Diana's support carries no cost to guests.

We're participating in NH Gives a 24-hour statewide giving event on June 9–10. The Haven serves community members on both sides of the Connecticut River, and NH Gives is one way to support that work. Find us at nhgives.org/organization/uvhaven!

Nancy Russell has been donating homegrown tomato plants to the Haven for six years.

This morning she arrived with a car full of them, each variety labeled in her handwriting and packed into repurposed coffee boxes. "I have to drink SO much coffee each year," she laughed.

"Every year I say I'm going to do less, but I end up doing more."

Thank you, Nancy. The plants are outside our front door if you'd like one to grow at home.
