Upper Valley Haven

Upper Valley Haven Since 1980, the Upper Valley Haven has provided temporary shelter for families and adults experiencing homelessness, as well as food for anyone in need.

The Upper Valley Haven is a private nonprofit that provides support and assistance to community members struggling with poverty in Vermont and New Hampshire. We meet people where they are, address immediate needs through food and shelter, and offer longer-term solutions that foster independence and housing stability.

Today marks the start of Hunger Action Month, a national effort to raise awareness about hunger where we live.

We see the need every day, in our Community Food Market, in our shelters, and with community members working with Service Coordinators. In Vermont and New Hampshire, 1 in 6 children face hunger. All September we're sharing how our Community Food Market and our network of community food partners respond to that need, and how you can be part of it. Every gift given this month is matched up to $25,000.

This weekend we had two tables around the Upper Valley.

On Friday, Matt, Hannah, Laura, and Will were at the Co-op Food Stores 90th anniversary party. On Saturday, Gwen, Erin, and Jake were at TLC Family Resource Center's block party in Lebanon.

We talked with community members interested in our services, connected with donors and old friends, and handed out candy and stickers along the way. Thanks to the Co-op and TLC for having us!

Fifteen years ago this week, Tropical Storm Irene hit the Upper Valley. Roads washed out and homes flooded across the region. The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at Hartford High School and needed somewhere to send donations. They called the Haven.

Former Executive Director Sara Kobylenski remembers taking that call.

Co-op Food Stores turns 90 this year, and we'll be at their White River Junction location this Friday, August 28, from 5-7pm to celebrate with them! We'll have a table set up. It's also been 10 years since customers started rounding up through Pennies for Change.

Stop by if you're in the neighborhood!

We received the first payment of a two-year grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation this month. They have been supporting our work since 2005.

The Foundation funds housing, food, health, education, and economic security across New Hampshire. In the Upper Valley, that includes organizations on both sides of the river.

Thank you to everyone at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation!

Doug and Bill from Lebanon Elks 2099 stopped by this morning with a Gratitude Grant. The Elks have backed our work for years. The grant supports food, shelter, and the everyday costs of keeping the doors open.

Thanks to everyone at Lodge 2099!

Volunteers keep the Haven running. They show up before the Food Market opens to sort crates of produce. They cook dinner for guests in our shelters. They're weeding beds, spreading compost and mulch, and beautifying our gardens.

Add it up and last year volunteers logged enough hours to equal 7 full-time staff positions.

If you'd like to be part of this, we could always use more hands, solo or with a group.
