Learn to Meditate: Sunday March 7: 10:00 - 11:00

Do you ever feel estranged from love? Cold from lack of kindness? Numbed by distraction and disconnection? Divorced from the energy of life? Malnourished by lack of intimacy and understanding? Alienated from meaningful inspiration and heartfelt, full engagement?

Meditation practice is love. It is the heat of kindness. It is feelingful presence and connection. It is being married to the energy of life. It is nourishing intimacy and understanding. It is wholeheartedly choosing to participate in society, joining the dance.

Meditation practice is training in all of those things.

LEARN TO MEDITATE CLASS Online
Sunday, Nov 29, 11 am to Noon.

A good class for both beginners and practitioners, this online open drop in class is a great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to connect with other meditators. It features a half hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, and time for discussion, led by Shastri Donna Williams, one of the White River Shambhala Center's senior teachers.

Topic for this week's class: Working with sense perceptions in meditation: When we meditate with our sense perceptions, we interrupt the momentum of thoughts and come back to the sound, or the smell, or the feeling, or whatever sense you’ve chosen to place your attention on. How can we use sight or vision as our anchor or focus for meditation practice? In the next several weeks we will use our perceptions as a place to come back to when our ordinary train of thought has dropped us back into the present moment. If you can start to practice this way with ordinary perceptions throughout your day, you’ll find that when challenges arise, you have tools for practice. You’re used to interrupting the momentum of a trail of thoughts. This technique can be really helpful!

Meditation can help us to access our emotions in ways where we’re not being reactive and splashing our confusion on our friends and the environment and we are also not repressing them. We can use meditation to help us gain insight into our emotions and channel the energy of them in ways that are constructive and empowering.

Topic for this week's class: When Strong Emotions Come Up "When a strong feeling comes up,It will often be accompanied by a strong habitual pattern. These are the emotions where you habitually go into a strong defense or justification, or your story, or a search for pleasure, or whatever it is you do. We could make enormous progress on the path if we allow our emotions to be part of that path, not repressing them, not acting them out, but being with them - breathing with them." Ani Pema Chodron

LEARN TO MEDITATE CLASS Online
Sunday, Nov 1st, 11 am to Noon.

A good class for both beginners and practitioners, this online open house is a great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to connect with other meditators. It features a half hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, and time for discussion, led by Shastri Donna Williams, one of the White River Shambhala Center's senior teachers.

Topic for this week's class: Why we meditate We practice meditation because it’s a means of unwinding and dissolving the habits that limit us so that we can open our heart. It is very counterintuitive—but when we feel an emotion that feels totally threatening and awful, it is time to hold the experience of it. From this courageous act of holding the experience, a very natural warmth emerges, for ourselves and for all other beings.

It features a half hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, and time for discussion, led this week by Jeffrey Slayton, one of the White River Shambhala Center's senior teachers.

Topic for this week's class: Each emotion is unique. “Emotions are the arising of the natural dynamic energy of life. We are the ones who ascribe the labels of “good” and “bad.” We turn our emotions into frozen objects and invest them with truth, and as a result they have so much power over us. So we train again and again in coming back to the object of meditation as a way of interrupting that fixated quality.”–Ani Pema Chödrön

It features half an hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, and time for discussion, led this week by Jeffrey Slayton, of the White River Shambhala Center's senior teachers.

Topic for this week's class: Being with yourself: "Meditation: is in essence being with yourself. One of the results of our meditation practice is nonstruggle: not rejecting our experience, fully engaged with ourselves, with the world, there for other people. Another result of coming back to being with yourself, just as you are, is that emotions don’t escalate." Ani Pema Chodron

LEARN TO MEDITATE CLASS
Sunday, Sept 20, 11 am to Noon.

A good class for both beginners and practitioners, this online open house is a great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to connect with other meditators. It features half an hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, followed by a talk by one of our senior teachers and a discussion period.

Topic for this week's class: Thoughts are not solid "As we sit in meditation, we could begin to realize that we create everything, all our thoughts, with our mind. They are not solid. They are not something tangible that we can grasp onto. They are concepts, interpretations, made from our conditioning. In other words, whether we are thinking about a beach in Barbados or a lover or our spouse or what to eat for lunch, it might feel very real. But Barbados isn’t in front of you, and lunch isn’t happening until later."
" Ani Pema Chodron

LEARN TO MEDITATE CLASS
Sunday, Sept 13, 11 am to Noon.

A good class for both beginners and practitioners, this online open house is a great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to connect with other meditators. It features half an hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, followed by a talk by one of our senior teachers and a discussion period.

Topic for this week's class: When thoughts arise. " Thoughts will arise, and when they do, let those thoughts pass through. It’s a very radical notion that thoughts could be a friend or an ally rather than an obstacle or something you have to struggle with. When thoughts call our attention to the discursiveness of our minds and call us back to the present moment, I’d say they are worth the price of admission." Ani Pema Chodron

ALL WELCOME! Please register before Sunday, by emailing [email protected] so that you can be sent the Zoom link before the class.

There is no cost for the class. Our in-person classes always have a bowl out for donations. A good class for both beginners and practitioners, this online open house is a great introduction to the Shambhala Buddhist teachings and an opportunity to connect with other meditators. It features half an hour meditation practice with meditation instruction, followed by a talk by one of our senior teachers and a discussion period.

Topic for this week's class: An obstacle to meditation. "Criticism is an obstacle to meditation, and harshness is an obstacle to awakening. This tendency to be hard on ourselves does not come from the buddha nature, the basic goodness within all of us; it comes from the ego and our conditioning. We all have the seeds of this basic goodness within us—we only have to nourish them. Nourishing the basic goodness within includes not judging ourselves for all the wild thinking that takes place in our mind.". Ani Pema Chodron
