“[Marina] Re and Celeste Ciulla gave standout performances at Saturday’s show. I was impressed by the nuance the brilliant Marina Re brought to Green, who was funny and at times tragic without ever veering into caricature… Ciulla’s performance contained similar depth.
– Marion Umpleby, Valley News

“The Waverly was outstanding, probably best of season. And Marina Re’s performance was one of the best, if not the best, in the history of Shaker Bridge! With several relatives who have suffered dementia we could readily relate to the character’s suffering through the impossible loss of a family member. And Bill’s direction was obvious...direction that made each word and move real. Congratulations on another wonderful season. We have already purchased next season’s tickets.”

“I don’t remember when I have seen such a powerful performance as that of Marina Re in an equally compelling play… This performance is now in my brain’s file (may it have a long and robust life) of unforgettable experiences.”

“If the subject matter makes you squeamish, and you are unsure if this is the play for you, I give you a reason, oh, a magnificent reason to catch “The Waverly Gallery”... and that reason is Marina Re. Re, as Gladys, is the heart and soul of this production. She makes you believe that Gladys is more than a fictionalized creation of Lonergan’s own grandmother, and a performance of a clever actor. No, in Re, we have someone who transforms Gladys into a fully realized vision before our very eyes, going through the various stages of Alzheimer’s as real and true as anyone who has been afflicted with the condition. The part, for sure, is a great one.”
– James Kent, Mountain Times

By James Kent I cannot say that Kenneth Lonergan’s semi-autobiographical 2000 play “The Waverly Gallery” is an uplifting experience, but it is a thought-provoking one, handled with deft and care by director Bill C***s and the cast and crew of The Shaker Bridge Theatre.

I don’t remember when I have seen such a powerful performance as that of Marina Re in an equally compelling play… This performance is now in my brain’s file (may it have a long and robust life) of unforgettable experiences. A critic writing a review of the 2019 revival of this play starring then 86 year-old actor Elaine May put it thusly (and slightly edited): “If you don’t see this play you are missing out. Go see it. Then . . . go out for a slice of pie and talk about it.” - Susan B. Apel, Artful

Kenneth Lonergan's Pulitzer-finalist play stars Marina Re as Gladys. Gladys, the elderly matriarch of the Green family, has run an art gallery in a small Greenwich Village hotel for many years. The management wants to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a coffee shop. Always irascible but now increasingly erratic, Gladys is a cause of concern to her daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandson, from whose point of view this poignant memory play is told.

“At its heart the play is about connection, identity, and the enduring support of family.”
- James Kent, Mountain Times

“The Waverly Gallery” will tug at the audience’s heartstrings as they watch a beloved matriarch slip into the terrifying world of dementia and witness her children try to find a place of love, light, and acceptance during one of their mother’s most trying chapters.”
- Emma Stanton Vermont Standard

“Deftly presents senility as an exaggerated state of the natural human condition… Deeply theatrical and often deeply funny.”
– The New York Times

The management wants to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a coffee shop. Always irascible but now increasingly erratic, Gladys is a cause of concern to her daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandson, from whose point of view this poignant memory play is told. A wacky and heartrending look at the effect of senility on a family.

For director Bill C***s, the play’s emotional core is what drew him to the material. “The thing that excites me most is it’s an examination, a demonstration, of the love that holds the family together,” C***s said. “I’m a real sucker for plays that are based in the family and what’s valuable about the family.”

At its heart, he said, the play is about connection, identity, and the enduring support of family.
