By James Kent I cannot say that Kenneth Lonergan’s semi-autobiographical 2000 play “The Waverly Gallery” is an uplifting experience, but it is a thought-provoking one, handled with deft and care by director Bill C***s and the cast and crew of The Shaker Bridge Theatre.

Kenneth Lonergan's Pulitzer-finalist play stars Marina Re as Gladys. Gladys, the elderly matriarch of the Green family, has run an art gallery in a small Greenwich Village hotel for many years. The management wants to replace her less-than-thriving gallery with a coffee shop. Always irascible but now increasingly erratic, Gladys is a cause of concern to her daughter, her son-in-law, and her grandson, from whose point of view this poignant memory play is told.

For director Bill C***s, the play’s emotional core is what drew him to the material. “The thing that excites me most is it’s an examination, a demonstration, of the love that holds the family together,” C***s said. “I’m a real sucker for plays that are based in the family and what’s valuable about the family.”

At its heart, he said, the play is about connection, identity, and the enduring support of family.
