Westchester Children's Association WCA is a multi-issue, child advocacy nonprofit that works to ensure that every child in Westchester WE EDUCATE! WE CONNECT! WE ACT!

WCA identifies the needs of Westchester’s children and youth, makes those needs known, and makes sure that they are met. We analyze data, publish information and hold events to educate the public and policy makers about children's needs. We convene and lead conversations to build a shared agenda addressing those needs. We advocate and mobilize parents, youth, and concerned citizens to support effective solutions that improve kids' lives.

📊 What does it cost to raise a child in Westchester? And who is most impacted by economic insecurity?

WCA’s 2026 Children By The Numbers Data Bulletin examines racial and ethnic disparities in child poverty alongside the rising costs families face.

In 2024, Black, Hispanic, and Multiracial children experienced poverty rates of roughly 15–26%, compared with poverty rates below 10% for White, Non-Hispanic children.

The cost of basic needs adds another layer of financial pressure. In 2024, the average rent in Westchester was $2,771 per month, while infant childcare averaged $2,105 per month.

These numbers raise an important question: After paying for rent and childcare, what’s left to live on?

Through research, coalition building, and policy advocacy, WCA works to address the structural inequities contributing to racial and ethnic economic disparities and advance policies that help children and families thrive.

📊 WCA’s 2026 Children by the Numbers Data Bulletin explores the connection between family structure and child poverty in Westchester County.

In 2024, more than three-quarters of children in Westchester lived in married-couple households. However, among children living in poverty, nearly three-quarters lived in single-led households.

The data also shows that poverty is disproportionately concentrated among single-mother households, with higher rates among Multiracial and Asian children.

These findings highlight how family structure, income disparities, and rising costs of living intersect — reinforcing the need for solutions that address the unique challenges facing children and families.

📊 WCA’s 2026 Children by the Numbers Data Bulletin highlights how income trends vary across family types in Westchester County.

From 2014 to 2024, all family types experienced income increases — but the gains were not equal. Single-mother households saw the smallest absolute income growth, while married-couple households experienced the largest increases.

These differences highlight the importance of understanding the unique economic pressures facing families and using data to guide solutions that support every child.

📊 New data highlights the realities facing children and youth in Westchester County.

Westchester Children’s Association has released the 2026 Children By The Numbers Data Bulletin, examining key trends affecting children and families throughout our community.

The bulletin shares important insights, including that nearly one-quarter of children and youth ages 0–24 in Westchester are considered low-income, along with changes in our county’s demographics and the declining number of babies and young children living in Westchester.

Understanding these trends helps us identify challenges, elevate community needs, and advocate for policies and investments that support children and families.
