We had the pleasure of meeting Owenicia Scarlett, a KEF scholarship recipient from The University of the West Indies, Mona on our visit to the campus.

We are glad to have met Owenicia and hear from her about her journey in the nursing program.

She stated that “I was in a very difficult position with securing financial support for school, this scholarship was a saving grace and I am very grateful”. We are proud to support her journey and see all that she will achieve!

Here are 5 nursing specialties you might not know about.

1. Forensic Nurse: Cares for patients affected by violence, abuse, and trauma by documenting injuries, collecting forensic evidence, and supporting legal investigations. They work in emergency departments, correctional facilities, and medical examiner offices.

2. Space Nurse: Supports astronaut health, aerospace medicine, and human spaceflight research through clinical care, operational medicine, and medical research. As commercial spaceflight grows, nurses are expected to play an increasing role.

3. Health Policy Nurse: Partners with government agencies and healthcare organizations to analyze, develop, and advocate for healthcare policy and legislation.

4. Transcultural Nurse: Provides culturally responsive, patient-centered care tailored to the diverse backgrounds of individuals and communities. They work in hospitals, community clinics, public health, and outpatient settings.

5. Toxicology Nurse: Cares for patients experiencing poisonings, overdoses, toxic exposures, and other poisoning-related emergencies. They work in emergency departments, intensive care units, poison centers, and specialty toxicology services.

At the Kimberley Ennis Foundation, we had the privilege of engaging with the dedicated nursing students at The University of West Indies Mona. It was truly inspiring to hear their personal journeys and experiences in the rigorous nursing program.

Our discussions were enriching, as students shared their passion for nursing and the challenges they face. We offered guidance on maintaining personal well-being and clinical focus amidst demanding studies.

Witnessing their determination and commitment to making a difference in healthcare reaffirmed our mission. These nursing students are the future of healthcare, and we are excited to support them on their journey. Keep pushing forward, future nurses; your hard work and compassion will change lives!

Dr. Mary Jane Seivwright was a distinguished public servant and educator who played a transformative role in advancing nursing education in Jamaica and across the Caribbean. As Director of the Advanced Nursing Education Unit at UWI, she helped strengthen curriculum, promote research, and elevate the standards of the nursing profession.

Her impact extended beyond academia, she was widely recognized for her commitment to national development and for inspiring women and young people to pursue excellence in their fields.

Every visit to the UWI Mona campus is a great experience, meeting the students and hearing their stories as well as reflecting on the remarkable legacy of Dr. Seivwright, a true pioneer in nursing was a privilege. I’m so glad to share her story and express my gratitude for her impactful legacy that inspires future generations of nurses! 💙🏥

Mentorship Monday: How to be a great mentor.

Happy Mentorship Monday. Let's talk about the other side of the relationship, being the mentor. If you're a nurse with even a few years of experience, someone is watching whether you know it or not, you're already influencing the next generation of nurses.
The question is: Are you doing it intentionally?

Being a great mentor isn't about having all the answers. It's about:

- Creating space for questions without judgement

- Sharing what you wish someone had told you, including the hard stuff

- Giving honest, specific feedback (not just "you're doing great")

- Advocating for your mentee in rooms they haven't entered yet

- Knowing when to push them and when to simply listen.

Great mentors don't produce nurses who think exactly like them.
They produce nurses who think for themselves, with better tools. If you had a mentor who changed your trajectory, take a second today to tell them. And if you haven't stepped into that role yet, it might be time.

Celebrating an incredible CNA during CNA Week!
Today, I want to shine a spotlight on Patricia Barrett, an incredible CNA and my mother. For 30 years, she has dedicated her life to providing compassionate care in the underserved communities of Greater Harlem, New York.

She is the inspiration behind the creation of the Patricia Barrett Scholarship for CNAs. Her unwavering commitment to her patients has not only changed lives but has also inspired countless others.

Every day, she shows up with dedication, offering hope, comfort, and strength to those who need it most. Her resilience, compassion, and the love she pours into her work truly make a difference! 💖👏
