Who We Are:
Backyard Sports Cares (BYSC) is the non profit (501c3) division of Backyard Sports, the leading provider of community team sports programs for kids of all ages in Westchester County. Established in 2005, Backyard Sports is committed to replacing today’s “win at all costs” mentality of youth sports with an approach that promotes increased self confidence and a lifetime love of sports wh

ile maximizing the athletic potential of each participant. Backyard Sports Cares was created to bring these ideals to children who have limited access to traditional youth sports programs, including children with special needs. How We Do It
Backyard Sports Cares employs a dedicated group of skilled Teacher/Coaches who serve as instructors and role models. These professionals are assisted by young athletes and student leaders who volunteer as peer mentors. The program consists of weekly skill sessions and competitive game play for boys and girls in Pre K through high school. Current sports offerings include soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, fitness and martial arts. In addition to providing programs at our own facility, Backyard Sports Cares has partnered with schools and community agencies to offer on site early morning, recess, after school and summer sports activities. Anderson Foundation for Autism Awards $10,000 Grant to Backyard Sports Cares in White Plains

White Plains, NY and Staatsburg, New York…The leadership team and trustees of Anderson Foundation for Autism announced today that it has awarded a grant of $10,000 to Backyard Sports Cares.

Based in White Plains, New York, Backyard Sports Cares is a nonprofit organization that provides athletic programming to athletes who have limited access to traditional community sports programs.

Said Ray Wilcox, Chief Advancement Officer of Backyard Sports Cares, “Anderson Foundation for Autism’s grant will help us address critical gaps in service for children with special needs, who often do not have access to athletic experiences due to a lack of resources, support, and opportunities. With Anderson Foundation for Autism’s help, we can further our work in this area, and we are very excited to do so.”

Wilcox shared that grant funding from Anderson Foundation for Autism will allow Backyard Sports Cares to expand on its “Plus” program. “Adaptive sports and recreation will be offered on Sunday mornings to approximately 40-45 children ages 5-17. Additionally, through our Friday night special events, participants will enjoy memorable experiences in a fun, social setting that promotes physical activity and camaraderie.” The Plus program, according to Wilcox, is “also supported by our robust cohort of volunteers; we match neurotypical high-school athletes with our neurodivergent athletes on a one-to-one basis, thus creating long-lasting friendships and relationships that live past the duration of the program.”

Over 5,000 Westchester kids served each year by Backyard Sports Cares - children who have limited access to youth sports programs either because they live in underserved communities or are athletes with special needs. There is no participation fee for our after-school programs. That’s why we need your support to ensure the sustainability and continued growth of these valuable programs.

Join us in making a difference this GivingTuesday!

For many children throughout Westchester County, the end of the school day means the beginning of after-school activities. Some head off to music lessons, others to dance classes and many participate in private sports programs. However, for 11-year-old Maya, the situation is a little more challenging. Her parents face financial constraints that prevent them from providing these after school activities, and recreational programming is scarce in her neighborhood. This is where Backyard Sports Cares steps in.

We are deeply grateful to the Anderson Foundation for Autism for awarding Backyard Sports Cares a $10,000 grant in support of our Backyard Sports Plus Program! 💙💙💙

This generosity strengthens one of the most essential parts of our mission: delivering inclusive, adaptive sports and social opportunities for children and young athletes with special needs. The work of the Plus Program is truly crucial — providing confidence-building physical activity, meaningful peer interaction, and a supportive community where every athlete feels they belong.

With this support, we can continue offering weekly adaptive multi-sport sessions and monthly social events, all powered by our one-to-one volunteer model led by dedicated local middle and high school students.

Thank you to the Anderson Foundation for believing in this work and helping us expand these vital opportunities for our special needs community. Your partnership allows us to deepen our impact and build a more inclusive Westchester. 💙
