West Africa at a Historic Crossroads: My Take on the Coup Surge
Yesterday, December 7, 2025, I closely followed from afar the failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin, a West African country bordering Nigeria. Earlier in November, I learned of a thwarted coup plot in Nigeria in September. With military juntas rapidly taking over governments across West Africa, I knew I could not simply observe these developments from a distance. I needed to understand why this is happening—and what it means for the region’s future.

This issue is deeply personal to me. Having grown up during periods of military dictatorship in Nigeria, I witnessed firsthand the setbacks, fear, and long-term devastation that military regimes inflict on individuals, families, and entire societies. That lived experience shapes the urgency with which I view the current wave of coups and fuels my determination to analyze and speak about these trends.

Today, I am sharing the outcome of that work—a timely public policy publication titled “Wave of Coups in West Africa (2020–2025): Democratic Decline, Geopolitical Shifts, and the Return of Military Rule.”

Between 2020 and 2025, West Africa witnessed an alarming resurgence of military coups and attempted coups that have profoundly reshaped the region’s political, security, and governance landscape. This comprehensive study explores:

The internal drivers fueling democratic backsliding

The impact of Russia, China, and the retreat of Western influence

The expanding security crisis across the Sahel

The implications for ECOWAS, regional stability, and civil–military relations

Pathways toward democratic renewal, accountability, and sustainable peace

This publication offers critical insights for policymakers, scholars, peace practitioners, and anyone concerned with the future of governance and stability in the region.

Livelihoods were at risk, and the once-cohesive system began to break down
This memorable line from Dr. Jude Aguwa’s keynote perfectly captures how societies once at peace can gradually slip into conflict and violence:

“Livelihoods were at risk, and a once-cohesive system of coexistence began to break down. Over time, the memory of cooperation—of earlier modes of negotiated coexistence—faded from public awareness.”

We were proud to present the ICERMediation Honorary Award to Dr. Jude Aguwa
