📰 Susan Carroll, Esq., PWJC’s Director of Training, Outreach & Education, joined PIX11 News Morning News to discuss campus sexual violence, Title IX, and the role institutions and communities must play in prevention and response.
As Susan shared, “We all need to take on the role of teaching our kids about consent, autonomy, and active bystander intervention. But we also need to work to hold institutions accountable if they’re failing.”
Through PWJC’s Outreach & Education Program, our attorneys visit local high schools to engage students in meaningful conversations about consent, healthy relationships, and how we can build safer campus communities together. Students also receive practical information about their legal rights and protections, reporting options, and available resources. These conversations are critical to prevention and grounded in the understanding that sexual violence results from a person’s choice to violate another person’s consent.

This is a moment to stand with survivors. Let’s make it count. 💜

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, , Always, is a timely call to action: to stand in solidarity with survivors, challenge the norms that allow abuse to persist, and take action to ensure they have the support they deserve.

Standing with survivors means listening, believing, and speaking out. It also means strengthening the services people rely on to understand their options, make informed decisions, and determine what comes next.

At Pace Women’s Justice Center, we see the importance of those services every day. We provide free civil legal services to people experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, and elder abuse, helping ensure that legal help is available regardless of someone’s ability to pay.

There are meaningful ways each of us can make a difference:

• Share trusted resources and organizations so people know where to turn for help.
• Speak out about abuse, its impact, and the services available to those experiencing it.
• Donate to survivor-serving organizations working to keep critical services available and accessible.

This DVAM and beyond, collective support matters. When we turn it into action, we help strengthen the resources survivors deserve and build safer communities for all.

We stand in solidarity with Jane Doe of Cornell University and with survivors of sexual assault in our community and beyond.

As her case receives national attention, we are especially mindful of those for whom this conversation may reopen painful experiences of their own.

Every survivor should be heard with care, met with dignity, and supported on their own terms. The institutions entrusted with that response have a duty to take sexual violence seriously and respond in ways that protect and support those who come forward. Accountability for sexual violence belongs with those who commit it, and survivors should never be made to carry that weight.

Pace Women's Justice Center will continue to stand beside survivors navigating Title IX proceedings and the justice system, to advocate for meaningful accountability, and to educate students on consent and bystander intervention so that sexual violence is never tolerated or excused.

To Jane Doe and to every survivor: you are not alone. We are with you.

Beneficiary Spotlight: The Pace Women's Justice Center.

They're our partner on the crisis housing initiative this gala is helping fund — legal advocacy and support for survivors of domestic violence across Westchester.

Here's the number that drives this: the entire county has just 49 domestic violence shelter beds, across only three shelters. That's the gap we're working to close.

An attorney may not be the first person who comes to mind when we think about support for someone experiencing domestic violence. But abuse can create legal issues involving safety, children, finances, housing, and family relationships.
