Westchester Hudson Senior Squadron held a change of command ceremony this past weekend.

Congratulations to 1st Lt Dennis Badlyans on assuming command of NY-219. Lt Badlyans has distinguished himself as a leader within CAP, having served as Emergency Services Officer and stepping up to serve on Group staff. He is also a highly active Cadet Orientation Pilot, having provided countless flights to youth members.

We also welcome 1st Lt Philip Monteiro as he assumes the position of Deputy Commander. Lt Monteiro has held a variety of staff positions within 219. He also maintains mission aircrew qualifications and is one of our squadron’s leading Mission Radio Operator skills evaluators.

We thank our outgoing Commander, Maj Chris Buchholz, for his dedication and mentorship over the past four years. We also thank our outgoing Deputy Commander, Capt Kyra Carlson, whose organization and leadership have kept the squadron running smoothly. Our unit would not be where it is today without their tireless effort.

Please join us in continuing one of the most time-honored traditions of the Air Force and Civil Air Patrol as we welcome our new leadership and thank our outgoing commanders!

Last night, our members had the opportunity to fly the Redbird full motion flight simulator. Pilots and non-pilots alike had fun testing different landing and takeoff scenarios. We were even able to land the Cessna 182 on an aircraft carrier!

Yesterday at approximately 16:00 hours the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center started receiving distress signals on Long Island from an EPIRB that was last registered to a sailboat from 1999. They reached out to us at the Civil Air Patrol for our assistance to locate it. Capt. Paul Morer accepted the mission as the Incident Commander. He assembled and dispatched an Urban Direction Finding team who worked diligently prosecuting the signals until they honed on its exact location. They located it on a boat that hadn't been seaworthy in years and with the owner's permission, deactivated it and took possession of it. This is where all of our training comes into practice. Great job by all!

This weekend we provided support to the Aerial Photography exercise. Mission Base staff coordinated aircraft throughout New York Wing, while two of our aircrews flew over 500 total miles to objectives across the state.

Great job to our volunteers who adapted to changing conditions, delivered on their assignments, and once again put the capabilities of CAP on display!

We had a great time touring with HPN Airport Operations last night! We began in the “bridge,” which is the command center where operations are coordinated, weather is monitored, METARs are updated, and much more. We then saw the airport firefighting (ARFF) equipment.

It was great to see what happens behind the scenes while we’re flying and to meet the people who keep us safe. Thank you to the HPN Airport Ops team for having us!

Join us in celebrating 82 years of Civil Air Patrol's incredible journey and impact. From supporting wartime efforts in the '40s to empowering future aviators, we are proud to continue serving our nation through our educational programs and operational missions as the U.S. Air Force auxiliary. A special thank you to our amazing volunteers who soar high with us.

Some of our members participated in this weekend’s UDF (Urban Direction Finding) training held at South Eastern Group. UDF is an important component of CAP’s emergency services capabilities, and this training will further enhance our skillset.

This weekend’s training exercise was a success, and we even made a cool friend on the ramp!
