OFFICIAL STATEMENT
OFFICE OF THE FORMER VICE PRESIDENT, CHIEF DR. JEWEL HOWARD-TAYLOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Subject: Statement on the Removal of Official Historic Records from the Office of the Vice President’s Social Media Page.
The Office of Former Vice President Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor expresses deep concern over the systematic removal of official posts, records, and media documenting her tenure from the official page of the Office of the Vice President.
The primary purpose behind creating and maintaining this digital platform during Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor’s leadership was to digitally preserve Liberia’s institutional memory, ensure transparency, and keep the public informed of state affairs.
A change in leadership should never result in the erasure of a predecessor’s public record. Public institutions and the public archives they generate belong to the people of Liberia, not to the individuals who temporarily occupy public office. The official records documenting diplomatic engagements, international conferences, policy initiatives, and national service carried out by former Vice President Howard-Taylor constitute a vital chapter of our country’s collective history and deserve to be preserved.
This alarming action raises fundamental questions about transparency and accountability within public office:
1) Who authorized the removal of these official records?
2) What was the rationale behind deleting public institutional history?
These are legitimate questions that warrant clear, responsible, and transparent answers.
While political disagreement is a natural part of a vibrant democracy, political differences must never serve as justification for erasing history. Today, it is the official record of Former Vice President Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor; tomorrow, it could be the records of another public servant.
Liberia must foster a culture of institutional continuity, one where successive administrations respect and protect the contributions of their predecessors, regardless of political affiliation.
History belongs to the Liberian nation, not to any single administration or political entity.
We call on the relevant authorities to restore these records (if hidden from public view, as allowed by Facebook), respect Liberia’s history, and protect the truth for future generations.
Signed,
Office of the Former Vice President, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor
