Celebrating Vietnam Veterans Day in Albany
Senator Shelley Meyer

I was honored to be joined in Albany on Wednesday by Vietnam veterans from Westchester and Putnam, on the 50th Anniversary of U.S. troops returning home from the Vietnam War. I was proud to speak on behalf of the Senate Resolution proclaiming March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day in New York State.

One of the Veterans who joined us was Colonel Chester (Chet) Edwards, from my district. Chet served in the U.S. Navy from ‘66 to ‘72. After the tragic events of 9/11, he re-enlisted in the New York State Guard in 2003, where he served until his retirement in 2018. Chet currently serves as a Veterans Advocate working in the Westchester County Veterans Alliance, Inc. and is a major organizer of the truly wonderful Honor Flight program here in our county. Chet is also an active participant in my Veterans Advisory Committee. If you are interested in joining, please email me at [email protected].

Place at least 38,000 Veterans experiencing homelessness into permanent housing.
Ensure that at least 95% of the Veterans housed in 2023 do not return to homelessness during the year. And of those who return to homelessness, VA will ensure that at least 90% are rehoused or on a path to rehousing by the end of 2023.
Engage with at least 28,000 unsheltered Veterans to help them obtain housing and other wraparound services. This goal represents a more than 10% increase in the number of unsheltered Veterans reached during 2022.

Social Security Celebrates Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month, a perfect time to recognize, reflect on, and celebrate the contributions of women today and throughout history. This year’s theme is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories. We are proud to join the nation in recognizing the incredible impact women have on our society. Women make critical contributions to the labor force in diverse industries. Their stories elevate women’s voices everywhere and make the world a better place.

One woman who has spearheaded important research about the importance of Social Security to women is Dr. Heidi Hartmann, founder, and former president of the Institute of Women’s Policy Research. An expert in women’s issues and economics, she has dedicated her career to researching and addressing economic security policy for women. You can read more about Dr. Hartmann and her work on
our blog. Be sure to subscribe to blog updates when you visit the page.

Please also remind all of the women in your life that one of the best ways to plan for retirement is to open a personal my Social Security account to get estimates of future retirement benefits. It is a good idea to check your estimates every year.

More information for women is available on our Social Security for Women webpage.
