The origin of The Footwedge Open Charity Golf Classic dates back to the year 1987 at the University of Dayton where a number of graduating seniors decided to get a group of friends together and have a golf tournament instead of going to class! All proceeds were donated to a wonderful institution – Maryville Academy, a recognized leader in the treatment of physically, sexually and emotionally abuse
d and neglected children led by Father John Smyth. The Footwedge took off and became an annual event for the next 13 years and raised approximately one million dollars for the children of Maryville. Many great memories were created over those years while we did our small part to help give the Maryville children a chance their family situations didn’t allow them to have. The last Footwedge Open was held in 2003. After a 14 year break to raise kids, families, etc., The Footwedge Open is back! 2017 is our come back year and the charity we will be working with is Children’s Oncology Services. Children’s Oncology Services, COS, is an amazing organization that runs 11 different programs for children ages 5-19 who have been diagnosed with cancer. They are the only local organization to offer this many programs throughout the year serving children and families who live in Illinois, Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. Thanks to its 350 annual volunteers, including medical professionals, children who are in different stages of treatment have the ability to attend our One Step Programs. Since its inception in 1979, Children’s Oncology Services has served more than 13,000 campers. As the COS staff members often say, “We exist to heal scars that no one can see such as fear, isolation, depression, lack of support and no longer fitting in. Through community, support and shared experiences with peers, we deliver happy, pain free medicine called ‘camp’.”
WE EMPOWER KIDS WHO HAVE CANCER, ENCOURAGING THEM TO TAKE ON THE WORLD!
