East Wheeling Cooperative is now enrolling a THRIVE Corps AmeriCorps VISTA member as our Capacity Building & Operations Coordinator.
Who we are. EWC is a resident-led 501(c)(3) rebuilding East Wheeling from the inside out. Six programs, one roof:
🔨 RESTORE — acquiring and rehabbing property in the neighborhood
📈 BUILD — entrepreneurship, business acceleration, and workforce development
🎤 AMPLIFY — resident engagement, placemaking, and community events
🧭 Navigators — resident coaching, peer support, and resource navigation
📊 Community Intelligence Center — research, housing data, and neighborhood reporting
⚒️ Apprenticeship Academy — building-trades training on EWC's own projects
What this is. VISTA is a year of national service — not a job, not an internship. VISTA service is indirect, meaning you don't run the programs. You build the systems that let the programs run: the volunteer pipeline, the grant calendar, the partnership network, the handbooks, the tools that measure whether any of it's working. When your year is up, that infrastructure stays.

First, who we are. EWC is a resident-led 501(c)(3) rebuilding East Wheeling from the inside out. We run six programs under the EWC Impact Studio:
RESTORE — acquiring and rehabbing property in the neighborhood
BUILD — entrepreneurship, business acceleration, and workforce development
AMPLIFY — resident engagement, placemaking, and community events
EWC's own projects
Now, what this is. VISTA is a year of national service — not a job, not an internship. VISTA service is indirect, which means you don't run the programs. You build the systems that let the programs run: the volunteer pipeline, the grant calendar, the partnership network, the handbooks, the evaluation tools. When your year is up, that infrastructure stays.
What you'd build with us:
Volunteer recruitment systems, assignment forms, and training materials
Grant writing, funder research, and a working funding database
Community partnerships and a media kit that gets East Wheeling covered
Policy handbooks, procedures, and a real way to measure our impact
How we work. Autonomously — everybody here owns a distinct piece, and those pieces work in unison toward the bigger picture. You'll have real ownership from day one.
And you won't be thrown in the deep end. This is not sink or swim.
We give you the tools, the training, and the context to actually succeed at what we're asking. You'll have direct access to the Executive Director and to members of our board — people who've built businesses, run construction companies, worked in real estate and finance, and know this neighborhood by name. Ask questions. Use them.
We're a driven, proactive, personable team that works hard in cooperation and feeds off each other's energy. You'll grow here, and you'll be part of a real team — honestly, more like family. That's not a slogan. It's a small organization in a small neighborhood, and you'll feel it by week two.
What you receive:
$24,962 living allowance, paid bi-weekly across 365 days of service
$7,395 education award for loans or future schooling — or roughly $1,800 in cash
Healthcare and childcare benefits may be available
Relocation benefit if you're moving more than 50 miles
You may qualify for or keep federal assistance like SNAP or HUD
One year of federal non-competitive hiring eligibility afterward
Requirements:
18 or older, high school diploma or GED
Some volunteer experience — informal counts
A reliable vehicle is required. This role moves around the neighborhood and the Ohio Valley
Full-time, one-year commitment. School enrollment is restricted during service — ask us
Background check required. A past conviction does not automatically disqualify you. We mean that
