With schools wrapped up for the summer, let's take a moment to highlight the Second Step curriculum that Brooke County Schools implemented in every classroom this past year! 🏫

Second Step helps students build important social-emotional skills, strengthen relationships, and develop healthy ways to navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.

Special thanks to YSS's Ashley Flaherty, Expanded School Mental Health Coordinator for Brooke Middle School, and the West Virginia Department of Human Services’ Bureau for Behavioral Health for supporting this grant-funded Expanded School Mental Health initiative.

Please join us in welcoming Steven Bieniek and Jonathan Turak to the YSS Board of Directors! 🎉

Steven currently serves as Business Manager for Ohio County Schools and earned his CPA license within his first year with the district. His financial expertise and commitment to public service help support students and schools throughout Ohio County.

Jonathan spent his career practicing law, joining Gold, Khourey & Turak as an associate in 1981 and becoming a partner in 1984. He is now retired after decades of service to the legal profession in the Ohio Valley and remains active in the community.

We are grateful to add Steven and Jonathan's expertise, leadership, and energy to our Board.

YSS is supported by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors whose members generously share their time, knowledge, and passion to help guide our organization and advance our mission of providing prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery services for youth and families across the Ohio Valley.

The City has continually supported creating welcoming spaces for children and families, and we're proud to continue our long-term community partnership by helping make pool visits a little easier for local families.

YSS is happy to share that 25 kids in our care are reaching a graduation milestone this year! 🎓

We are so proud of our graduates and all they have achieved. It takes courage and hard work to keep moving forward, and each of these young people has so much to celebrate.

It is an honor to care for them and share in these cherished life moments alongside them. We can't wait to see what comes next for each and every one of them.

Join us in celebrating the Class of 2026! 🎉

In closing of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to spotlight a colorful mural project from Prevention North Region 1 highlighting the voices of local youth!

Each coalition in the region was tasked with recruiting and creating a mental health mural featuring quotes from youth responding to a mental health prompt.

Participating coalitions included the Wetzel County Advocates Toward Community Hope, RISE Prevention Coalition in Marshall County and the Community Impact Coalition in Ohio County. Thank you to everyone who helped bring these murals to life and create spaces that encourage support and awareness surrounding mental health!

Our Program Managers at Samaritan House and Helinski Shelter spent time planting flowers alongside residents as we get ready for summer. Safe to say we’ve got a few green thumbs around here! 🌱
