Over the last five years our family and many others families have been blessed by the generosity and support that the Miles for Maverick participants have shown. This wonderful group of people have rallied behind our family since Maverick's diagnosis in 2019 and it has only grown since. The support continued as Watson battled a brain tumor and now all three of our children are living their best lives, and keeping us busier than ever before.
Our daughter is 10, our twin boys are 5 (6 at the end of August) and this started for our kids so we have spent a lot of time talking with them as a family about the upcoming ride and the direction of the foundation. This is all in their honor and we have decided to take a little time off from the ride until they are older to participate in a different capacity. Cancer is very real, and it is haunting so many people around us, RAPIDLY - we have been living and breathing the c word for the last five years.. Maverick does very well, he is happy go lucky and doesn’t really remember much from his hardest days, but Watson was 4.5 and he very much remembers EVERYTHING. He has been trying to find ways to move on from the tumor that almost took his life just over a year ago, and we want to give him that opportunity while he is still so young. We do not want them to forget the blessings that they have been given, but we also do not want them to be submerged in this for their daily lives. We have been in prayer that they may find a fun, creative outlet for themselves that can in turn also create funds for those who need it.
This does not mean that we are closing the foundation or we are wrapping it up - because that is not the plan, instead we are trying a few different avenues to change our approach and still continue to bless others in their hardest days. Our kids have a few ideas, and throughout our 5 years in and out of UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh we have witnessed small tokens that contribute to big blessings along the way. In the coming months please keep a look out for how you may continue to support our foundation and keep the blessings coming to those in need.
We would also like to highlight another Foundation (Colby's Stars Foundation, Inc.), who blessed us when Maverick was diagnosed and they are doing great things - they host a very successful kickball tournament for adults and kids as well as hosting a ride and poker run the last two summers. Please follow them as well - and support them, as they have been doing this for many years and they have blessed HUNDREDS of families! We are hoping that our family can participate with them in their incredible events and I PRAY that our Miles for Maverick Rally Team will do the SAME!
NOW - THIS IS WHERE WE STILL NEED YOU TO RALLY - while we have had it on our hearts for the last several weeks that we have wanted to pause our ride (not eliminate it, but take some time off to enjoy our happy, healthy children and all that they are a part of right now - competitive cheerleading, soccer, 1st and 5th grade). We finally talked with our families and told them how we were feeling, and God brought it all full circle - AS HE ALWAYS DOES.
My husband’s aunt was recently diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, she will be undergoing very, very aggressive treatment and with that comes a lot of traveling, and a loss of an income as she will no longer be able to work. She has two beautiful children and a husband who loves her more than anything - so although we are stepping back from riding with Miles for Maverick… we will be riding FOR Laura Clark … I pray and pray and pray that you will all join us this summer to ride for Laura. With the pause that God laid on our hearts we are able to take what we know and what we have leftover from Miles for Maverick to pour it into another loving family who needs this SO MUCH!
