In 2001, a small group met in Nairobi to put together materials to respond to traumatized people in war zones across Africa. This program and its materials have spread around the world. First, the history and development of the program are presented. Then, the article reports research findings on the program’s effectiveness in relieving trauma symptoms, developing spirituality, and increasing coping skills. The article closes with insights into why this approach has been so successful.

Jesus’s coming was whole-of-life. Yet often, when thinking of the gospel, we focus just on words. Thinking of the wholeness of salvation alerts us we always have more to learn. Openness to things we have not previously encountered or thought of is critical for effective missionary work. No doubt, more challenges will come that we are not yet aware of. But Jesus is the answer. He will show us how to live holistically for him wherever we are.

We are pleased to release Issue 62.2 of EMQ, an exploration of holistic ministry that holds together word and deed, proclamation and action. Yet, finding balance between proclamation and action in the face of human need can be challenging. Issue 62.2 wrestles with the complexities of trauma, healing and health, disaster relief, climate change, work, and the priority of relationships. These insights arise out of the reflections and lived experience of cross-cultural workers.

As refugees and asylum seekers flee situations of violence and terror, they often are disillusioned by what they have seen and experienced. As a result, they frequently arrive in new contexts with an openness to new ideas including hearing about the Lord Jesus. Yet, there are many challenges. One often neglected challenge is literacy. There is a need to develop new methods and resources for ministry to refugees and asylum seekers that better meet their diverse literacy needs. This article is based on the author’s experience in Jordan but highlights what could be done other contexts.

The 10/40 Window highlights regions where people have least access to Christianity. It encourages Christians to focus missionary efforts on those areas. However, it has led to neglect of diaspora populations, such as Muslims living in the US, who also need outreach. Parada argues that mission should prioritize people over geography. He urges churches to balance global and local efforts and not to overlook unreached groups living nearby.

Christians are called to welcome strangers, build relationships, and share Christ’s love across cultures. Cultural diversity is increasing in many neighborhoods across the world. New ways of connecting are affecting how people do church. Mission among diaspora communities requires flexible approaches to ministry based on relationships. As we make friends with diverse neighbors, this can challenge us yet enrich our faith.

OVERCOMING FEAR OF SORCERY: DISIPLING IN UNFAMILIARY AREAS
Mahmud and his family faced a suanggi (shapeshifting sorcerer) terrorizing their community. We conversed deeply about culture and the specifics of suanggi. We studied how to understand spiritual beings from a biblical perspective, and how to overcome fear, examining scriptures to learn how to act biblically. Mahmud and his family discovered new ways to share their faith within their community. The Holy Spirit helped us all grow in our faith.

FINDING JOY IN HARDSHIP
Rejoice always, even in the midst of hardship. We can learn from Paul through the letter he wrote to the church in Philippi during his time of suffering. Paul instructs us to find joy in ministry – in the partners he provides for us, the proclamation of the gospel, the unity we possess with believers, the privilege to serve others, friendships that are formed, and fruitfulness of lives impacted. Ultimately, we can find joy in the Lord Himself regardless of our situations.

SPIRITUAL RESILIENCE
Spiritual resilience is a fruit of vibrant spiritual life. Resilience enables missionaries to persevere through hardship, learning to find joy in its midst. It enables them to navigate the unfamiliar, overcome spiritual blocks, and learn together with friends. Its essence is willingness to give up all for Christ.
