We love the conversation and revelation of Jesus on the Emmaus road in Luke 24— so much so, that we borrowed from the passage for our own name. Two disciples had part of the story of the Son of Man, but not all of it. They were looking for a crown, for a conqueror. But they didn’t see the suffering in the Law & the Prophets. The cross surprised them, and Jesus illuminated the mystery for them “beginning with Moses and through all the prophets” (Lk. 24:27). The testimony of the Scriptures is about Jesus from cover-to-cover. In fact, “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” (Rev. 19:10). So the cross and the crown are woven through every page, from Genesis 1:1’s “In the beginning” to Revelation 22:21’s “Amen.”
We see this as well throughout Isaiah, perhaps most pointedly just ten chapters apart. Many Christians are familiar with Isaiah 53: the suffering servant covered in His own blood. Flip forward a few pages to Isaiah 63, and we find Him covered in the blood of His enemies, conquering His way to receive His Jerusalem crown. These passages paint the Maranatha Jesus: He came once to break the power of sin and death, and He’s coming again to resurrect the saints, reign from His city, and lead us into the restoration of all things.
