Presidents Cup Continues its Major Impact in DuPage County by Donating $150,000 to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Partnership with the George and Cindy Rusu Family Foundation

Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans receives $150,000 donation from Presidents Cup and the George and Cindy Rusu Family Foundation ahead of 2026 event at Medinah Country Club, September 22–27

“MSHV is honored to have the Presidents Cup play a vital role in sustaining and expanding programs for homeless and at-risk veterans,” said Christine Lewis, Chief Executive Officer at the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Inc. “As we look ahead, we are developing new strategies to ensure that no veteran is left behind. This means providing individualized support such as housing, job training, mental health services, and more to empower veterans to rebuild their lives and thrive independently. The Presidents Cup's impact on the veteran community will change lives and restore hope for those who have given so much for our nation.”

“The Presidents Cup is honored to support the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans and the essential work they do to serve those who have served our country,” said Joie Chitwood, Executive Director of the 2026 Presidents Cup. “Through this contribution, we hope to play a small part in helping veterans access the stability, care, and opportunities they deserve. Giving back in meaningful ways like this is central to the legacy we strive to create in every host community.”

"The Cantigny 5k Run/Walk is an annual event that is instrumental to MSHV's programs," said Christine Lewis, MSHV Executive Director. "The team at Cantigny are phenomenal. They have worked with us to envision a future where no homeless veteran is left behind. A decade of service at Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Inc. has been reached
by Melodie Smith, Associate VP, Programs, and changed the course of MSHV programming forever.

Let us go back 10 years in time to when Melodie first walked in our doors:

“The Martian” was a favorite movie.

Adele was belting out the song “Hello”.

The Apple watch was first released.

Athleisure was a clothing trend taking over fashion.

The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl.

BUT most important of all, Melodie Smith started her masterpiece at MSHV!

10 years, thousands upon thousands of Veterans and their families served, and true to her character, Melodie has honored veterans not just with words — but with her life of service.

Melodie has led and shaped MSHV programs to ensure they are designed to meet each veteran where they are, providing tailored support through housing, employment services, and essential resources. With a
compassionate, individualized approach, Melodie and her team help veterans overcome barriers, regain stability, and move forward with dignity and purpose.

Melodie impacts the lives of everyone she encounters. She makes sure, in her special, caring way, that no one is left behind.

We can’t achieve our mission without Melodie’s thoughtful and insightful leadership.

Thank you, Melodie!

MSHV gives a big shout out to the Milton Township Community Mental Health Board-708 Board (MTCMHB)! They have awarded $33,000 to support MSHV’s individualized and veteran-centric case management at our Army SSgt. Robert Miller Home and Tammy’s Trace affordable housing sites.

MTCMHB is a wonderful leader in its purpose to aid, treat, educate, and prevent mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance use/abuse issues for persons and families residing in Milton Township.

This funding is crucial in allowing to focus on the mental health and substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery of our homeless, low-income veterans in Milton Township. MTCMHB allows MSHV to empower our , fostering sustained stability and an improved quality of life, including sobriety goals and improved physical and mental health.
