Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County

Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County Kiwanis is a non-profit organization serving the Central DuPage County area.

Our club donates our time and abilities to assist in the operation of various community organizations and their projects. In addition, we raise money to benefit the community through annual fundraisers including our pancake breakfast, golf outing, peanut day, and entertainment books.

Our Club strives to help all children of DuPage County, and this event is just one of the ways we do that — by working to end childhood hunger, one backpack at a time! Thanks for organizing this great event, Rotary Club!

Thank you to this week's speaker, Bill Homer, who is the Assistant City Manager of the Village of Glen Ellyn. Bill gave our Club an interesting presentation on some of the current and ongoing construction projects in downtown Glen Ellyn. If you've been down Main Street in Glen Ellyn lately, you'll notice all kinds of action including the renovation of the Civic Center and construction of a new parking garage next door, improvements to the Metra train station, and plans for a new pedestrian underpass (tunnel) to provide a safer method of crossing the train tracks on foot. They're also developing renovation plans for the streetscapes including updated paving, furniture and parkway plantings - all kinds of exciting things! Learn more about all of these initiatives here: https://www.glenellyn.org/682/Priority-Village-Projects-and-Initiative
We were also joined at this week's meeting by several members of the Naperville Kiwanis Club, which was great fun - to share a little slice of our Central DuPage routine and Barone's delicious lunch with our neighboring members!

Thank you to last week's speaker, our Club's own Susan DeRonne! Susan is the Adult Department Director at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, and she gave us a very informative talk on the new Real ID program that will become a mandatory requirement for all domestic air travel starting after October 1, 2020. (It'll also be required if you want to visit a military base or a secure federal facility)

📌 If you have a current valid passport or passport card, you don't need a Real ID -- the important change is that a driver's license or state ID will NOT be sufficient to get through TSA security checkpoints at airports for all domestic air travel after 10/1/20. (You still need a passport for international travel, that's not changing!) ✈️✈️✈️

📌 Learn more about it here: https://realid.ilsos.gov and visit their link to an INTERACTIVE CHECKLIST that helps clarify what documents you need to bring to the DMV when you apply for your Real ID: https://realid.ilsos.gov/checklist.html

Thank you to this week's speaker, David Wylly, who is the President and Founder of Medicare Solutions Network in Lisle, IL. Navigating health insurance coverage, prescription benefits, and claims can get pretty confusing, so we really appreciate the detailed, printed reference guide David provided our Club. His engaging and educational talk illustrated how much David enjoys helping his clients make sense of the world of Medicare. His services can also help save clients money by helping them find plans that fit their needs -- and making adjustments through the aging process as those needs change. Thanks again, David! To learn more or to enroll in one of their informative FREE seminars, consult the flyer here or visit their web site: http://www.medicaresolutionsnetwork.com

Thank you to this week's speaker, our Club's own globe-trotting Roger Bohn! He gave us a wonderful slide presentation of his "Mississippi Excursion Boat Trip" from a few years ago. It was a complete journey up the Mississippi, all the way from New Orleans to St. Paul, MN -- including side trips! Something we all should experience... thanks for sharing, Roger! We always look forward to hearing about your many adventures!

Thank you to this week’s speaker, Gilda Ross. She is the Student and Community Projects Coordinator for District 87 and shared an exuberant wealth of information with our Club about the Glenbard Parent Series program. She has been working to implement this community project’s mission for 20 years: to facilitate real-world parenting skills that enhance our teens' social and emotional development, encourage responsible decision-making, and promote respect-based relationships. Programs are free and open to the entire community; they have varying topics and start dates scattered throughout the year within the district. For more information on this great program, visit their website at www.glenbardgps.org.
