Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. The Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. Women building better communities. That's the Junior League.

is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. (JLKD) provides outreach services to organizations and individuals in Kane, DuPage, Will, and Kendall Counties. Our members, reflecting a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and professional pursuits, work t

ogether to identify unmet needs, forge effective coalitions, and work for change. JLKD is part of a larger body of Leagues, known as the Association of Junior Leagues International. The women of Junior League are focused not only on addressing the basic needs of our community, including food, healthcare, housing and education, but also cultural enrichment projects which inspire children and families to broaden their imaginations and their knowledge of the world around them. We enrich our membership through meaningful volunteer options, training and leadership development, recruiting and retention strategies, increased Sustainer involvement, and a growing sense of ownership and empowerment in our members. As we reach the end of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, it's important to remember that human trafficking can impact anyone. While trafficking disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, it is not limited to one demographic and there are no definite signs to determine if someone is being trafficked. Junior Leagues across the Association are engaged in combating human trafficking in their communities year-round. As Polaris reminds us, it is not about seeing the signs, but rather knowing the person’s story, as context is key. Human trafficking is often portrayed as a violent crime against only women and girls and often involves commercial s*x. However, here are the facts:
1. Human trafficking can be violent, but most traffickers use psychological means.
2. As many as half of s*x trafficking victims are male with LGBTQ boys and young men being more vulnerable.
3. Experts believe there are more situations of labor trafficking than of s*x trafficking, but there is more awareness of s*x trafficking.

Human trafficking does not happen in a vacuum. As seen in Junior Leagues’ community work nationwide, all of our impact areas are interconnected. In order to make an impact in preventing human trafficking, we need to not only change trafficking laws, but we also need to work to make changes to the foster care system to remove aging out, create systems to ensure everyone is paid a living wage, provide trauma-responsive, culturally sensitive, and survivor-based care practices, and ensure childhood education regarding online trafficking.

What a year it’s been! As we reflect back on 2021, we are reminded that living the value of service empowers each one of us to be a catalyst for lasting community change.
