A fake job offer can become a trafficking trap.

Criminal networks lure people with promises of legitimate work. Instead, many are trafficked into scam operations, where they are stripped of their freedom and forced to carry out online fraud under threats, violence, debt and fear.

Preventing this crime requires stronger oversight of recruitment agencies, safe labour migration pathways and greater awareness of deceptive recruitment practices.

Today is World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2026! The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) calls for greater action to protect human trafficking victims, and strengthen cross-border judicial and law enforcement cooperation to disrupt the transnational organized crime groups responsible.

The 2026 campaign, "Trapped behind the scam" brings to light the hidden human cost behind online fraud operations and the growing exploitation of trafficked persons forced to carry out cyber-enabled scams under coercion, violence and fear. It calls for stronger international cooperation to dismantle the criminal networks behind these operations, protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
