Today, we wrapped up our final School of Fire Prevention visit with the students at Hermitage R-IV School Elementary, and what a wonderful experience it has been! We hope every student learned valuable lessons about fire safety and prevention, including how to recognize potential hazards, make smart choices, and know what to do in an emergency. Sharing this information with young people is an important way to help keep them, their families, and their community safe. We especially want to thank the first- and second-grade students for the awesome sign they made for us. Your thoughtful artwork and kind message brought big smiles to our faces and made our visit even more special. We are grateful to the students, teachers, and staff at Hermitage Elementary for welcoming us and helping make our School of Fire Prevention program such a success.

We had another fun day focused on fire prevention! Today, we had the opportunity to welcome students from Weaubleau Elementary from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Since this was the first year Weaubleau students joined us, we had plenty of important information and activities to share. Students learned about fire safety, ways to prevent fires, and what to do if an emergency occurs. It was wonderful to see their curiosity, hear their questions, and watch them take part in the day. Teaching children these skills helps them feel more prepared and encourages safe habits at home, at school, and in the community. We’re grateful to the teachers and staff who helped make the visit possible, and to every student who came ready to learn. A big thank-you to Weaubleau Elementary for spending the day with us and giving us the chance to share these important lessons. We hope everyone had as much fun as we did, and we look forward to welcoming you back again. Thanks again, Weaubleau, for coming to see us!

Today, we welcomed students from Wheatland R-II School District to Central Station #1 to celebrate Fire Prevention Week and learn important ways to stay safe. During their visit, we talked about knowing their home address and why it is important to be able to share it clearly with a 911 dispatcher in an emergency. The students also learned when to call 911 and how emergency responders can help when someone is in danger. We practiced “Stop, Drop, and Roll,” a simple but valuable action to take if clothing catches fire, and discussed how to get out safely if there is smoke or a fire at home. Together, we explored the importance of planning more than one exit from each room, choosing a safe meeting place outside, and making sure everyone in the household knows the plan. Practicing a home fire escape plan ahead of time can help families respond quickly and calmly when every second matters. We enjoyed answering questions, sharing safety tips, and giving the students a chance to learn more about the work firefighters do in their community. Visits like this help children build confidence and remember what to do in an emergency, while also encouraging them to share what they learned with their families. Thank you to Wheatland Elementary for visiting Central Station #1 and taking part in Fire Prevention Week. We hope everyone left with useful knowledge and a reminder to review their home escape plan, practice it together, and always stay alert to fire safety.

October is Fire Prevention Month, and we can’t wait to welcome all the kids next week! We’re excited to share important lessons about fire safety and help students learn practical steps they can take to protect themselves, their families, and their homes. Through engaging activities and age-appropriate discussions, we hope to make these valuable messages both memorable and fun. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Hickory County Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for its generous donation. This support helps us pay for the reading and informational materials we’ll share with students, giving each child helpful resources to take home and revisit with their family. These materials reinforce what students learn during our visit and encourage everyone to talk about fire prevention, plan ahead.

As the Fire Chief of Central Hickory Fire Rescue, I have had the privilege of witnessing and leading the positive changes in our department over the last 7 years. From responding to 380 calls in 2019 to a staggering 1288 calls for service in 2025, we have seen tremendous growth and development. Our department has expanded from 2 stations to 5 stations, allowing us to better serve our community. The highlight of our growth was obtaining our ALS accreditation in the fall of 2025, a significant accomplishment that has enhanced our capabilities in providing emergency medical services. To further elevate our department, we have 13 of our firefighters in Firefighter 1&2 class, bringing our total number of national certified firefighters to 22. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team, and I am immensely proud of each and every one of them for their commitment to protecting our community. As we look towards the next seven years, I am excited to see the continued growth and progress of Central Hickory Fire Rescue. Together, we will strive towards excellence and ensure the safety and well-being of our community.
