Tomorrow, October 15th, wear purple to show your support for survivors of domestic violence! 💜

Awareness is just the beginning. Understanding the signs of abuse, listening to survivors, and knowing how to offer support are all important steps toward building safer communities.

With October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and celebrating 50 years of service in our community, Family Tree invites you to our third in a series of presentations about the work to fulfill our mission.

Learning Hour: Beyond Bruises: Understanding Coercive Control and Our Role in Ending Intimate Partner Violence

This powerful community presentation challenges common myths about intimate partner violence and sheds light on the often-hidden tactics used to gain and maintain power over another person. Participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of coercive control, understand a number of realities survivors face, and explore the critical role family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and community members can play in offering empowerment based support.

Ending abuse is not the responsibility of survivors. When communities know what to look for and how to respond, they become part of the solution. Join us to learn how awareness can become action, support can become safety, and communities can help break the cycle of abuse.

Presenters: Cymone Williams, Roots of Courage Shelter Director, Kade, Roots of Courage Lead Advocate, and Jazmin Tranquilino, Domestic Violence Services Lead Advocate.

On October 15, wear purple in recognition of Purple Day and to show your support for survivors of domestic violence. Every conversation, every act of support, and every effort to break the silence matters. Together, we can help build a future where survivors are heard, supported, and never alone.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how far we’ve come and how much work remains.

Domestic violence affects individuals, children, and families across Colorado every day. In 2024, Colorado lost 72 lives to domestic violence, a 24% increase from the year before. Among those lost were children whose lives were taken as collateral victims of domestic violence.

DVAM reminds us that raising awareness is about more than wearing purple or sharing a post. It’s about recognizing the signs, challenging harmful beliefs, supporting survivors, and creating communities where everyone can feel safe.

This month, help keep the conversation going. Share this post, learn something new, and help us build a future free from domestic violence.

Please help us welcome our newest Board Member, Adam Burg!

Adam is a Senior Policy Advisor at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP, where he advises businesses, public sector organizations, elected officials, and nonprofits on legislative, regulatory, and government affairs matters. His experience spans healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, economic development, local government, education, energy, and other emerging policy issues.

Prior to joining Brownstein, Adam held senior government affairs roles with Adams County, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, and Foster Graham Milstein & Calisher, LLP. He also served as the Director of Federal & State Affairs for the City & County of Denver under Mayor Mike Johnston, where he led the city’s state and federal legislative agenda and managed relationships with lawmakers, federal agencies, and national municipal organizations.

Adam brings a practical, relationship-driven approach to navigating complex policy issues and advancing strategic priorities at the local, state, and federal levels.
