Weโve been sitting with the recent news from our community, deeply saddened by whatโs been reported and honestly struggling to find the right words. We didnโt want to rush a statement just to say something, but we also donโt want to stay silent about something that weighs so heavily on our community.
While Bunanza is a rabbit rescue, our hearts are with all animals. The reports of approximately 30 dogs seized in Whatcom County are heartbreaking, and weโre grateful these animals are receiving medical evaluation and care through Whatcom Humane Society and the other amazing rescues stepping up to help.
With an ongoing investigation and criminal charges pending, we wonโt speculate about the circumstances. But we do want to talk about something this situation affects far beyond one organization: trust.
Animal rescue depends on trust. People trust us with animals they love, their donations, their time, and their homes as foster families. When that trust is shaken, it can make people question all rescues. And we understand why.
We believe rescue must come with accountability. That means appropriate food, housing, veterinary care, enrichment, and humane treatment. It means using donations responsibly and being willing to answer questions about how we operate.
You should never have to blindly trust a rescue! Ask questions. Ask how animals are housed and what veterinary care they receive. Ask how donations are used. Ask volunteers about their experiences, too.
Trust isnโt earned simply because an organization calls itself a rescue, itโs earned through the care we provide, the decisions we make, and the accountability we uphold.
To our fosters, volunteers, donors, adopters, and community partners: thank you for trusting Bunanza with the rabbits in our care. We donโt take that trust lightly. ๐ค
We hope this situation doesnโt discourage people from supporting animal rescue altogether. There are compassionate, hardworking people doing this work responsibly every day, and the animals still need us.
Keep asking questions, advocating for animals, and expecting better. ๐ฐ๐ค
