Fresh Check Day creates a welcoming space for students to talk about mental health, build connections, and learn where to find support. By reducing stigma and encouraging students to seek help, it strengthens campus wellbeing and reminds students they do not have to face challenges alone.

CCPG’s Kaitlin Brown, Senior Director of Programs and Services, and Brian Hatch, Community Engagement Manager, joined students at Quinnipiac University for Fresh Check Day and the launch of Before You Bet! Stephen and Kayla were also there with the Know The Risks of Gambling Resource Van, sharing information and support resources with students.

Developed in partnership with CCPG, the new Before You Bet booth joins Connecticut Children’s Youth Su***de Prevention Center’s Fresh Check Day programming to help students recognize gambling risks, understand the connection to mental health, and connect with support.

Session Spotlight: Breaking the Stigma; Why Military Service Members and Veterans Don’t Talk About Gambling

Military service members and veterans can be up to twice as likely to experience disordered gambling as their civilian counterparts, yet stigma can prevent many from coming forward and seeking help.

At the 2026 CCPG Annual Conference, Dave Yeager will present Breaking the Stigma: Why Military Service Members and Veterans Don’t Talk About Gambling Addiction.

Drawing from his own personal journey as a service member and veteran who struggled with disordered gambling, Dave will put a face on this important issue while exploring why military members and veterans may be at greater risk, why stigma remains such a significant barrier, and what can be done to help more people feel comfortable seeking treatment and support.

📢 We’re Hiring!

The Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) is seeking a Program Manager for our Multicultural Problem Gambling Prevention Program.

This grant funded position will support the 2026–2027 Multicultural Problem Gambling Prevention Program, a partnership between CCPG and the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Problem Gambling Services (DMHAS PGS). The position is funded through June 30, 2027.

Residency Requirement: Applicants must reside in the State of Connecticut for the duration of their employment in this position.

When does trading cross the line from a financial activity into potentially harmful behavior?

At the 2026 CCPG Annual Conference, Abdullah Mahmood will present The Ins and Outs of Day Trading, Stock and Prediction Markets, an important session designed to help mental health professionals better understand the connections between high risk trading behaviors, problem gambling, and emotional and psychological distress.

Attendees will explore the basics of day trading and the stock market, the psychological and behavioral parallels with gambling disorder, and risk factors such as impulsivity, sensation seeking, and distorted beliefs about control. The session will also examine warning signs of problematic trading, the impact of financial losses on mental health and relationships, and clinical considerations for working with clients experiencing harm.

While gambling disorder has historically been viewed as a male issue, women are one of the fastest growing groups experiencing gambling related harm, yet their experiences can remain hidden because of stigma and barriers to identification and treatment.

At the 2026 CCPG Annual Conference, Jody Bechtold, LCSW, ICGC II, BACC, and Christina Cook, IGRS, host of The Broke Girl Society Podcast, will present Women and Gambling: The Hidden Epidemic.

Combining clinical expertise with lived experience, Jody and Christina will explore gender specific risk factors, stigma, hormone pathways to harm, and barriers to treatment. Attendees will also gain practical assessment, intervention, and engagement strategies to better support women experiencing gambling related problems.
