No sooner is Craft Fair over than it's time for the 17th Annual Old Wethersfield Lantern Light Tours. Coming up this weekend, October 9, 10, and 11, ticket sales have been remarkably brisk. The following shows still have tickets available:

Friday, 10/9 at 8:00 pm 15 tickets available

Saturday, 10/10 at 8:00 pm 1 ticket available

Sunday, 10/11 at 7:15 pm 5 tickets available

Weather forecast for this Saturday's 44th Annual Old Wethersfield Arts and Crafts Fair is looking great! Advanced purchase tickets are only $7 if purchased in-person at Old Academy (150 Main Street, Wethersfield) by cash or check. Saturday at the gate, admission jumps to $10. Stop by during business hours today, tomorrow, and Friday and save yourself $3. Remember that all proceeds from this event go to support Wethersfield Historical Society's educational programming.

Wethersfield Historical Society's Executive Director Julia Isenberg presents a string of red onions to Mayor Ken Lesser as partial payment of our annual rent as specified by our lease with the town. Also in attendance representing the society (from right to left) were Governing Board Chair Dorene Ciarcia, Vice Chair Marc Berube, Treasurer Doug W**d, Rental Services Coordinator Renee Kraft, (Executive Director Julia Isenberg), and Governing Board Member Mike Munroe. In her introductory remarks, Chair Dorene Ciarcia thanked the Town of Wethersfield for assisting the society in serving the larger community "by preserving and sharing our town’s remarkable history, providing cultural programming, and offering historic education that connects people of all ages with the stories that have shaped Wethersfield". She concluded by saying the society is looking forward to serving the Wethersfield community for many years to come.

In observance of the Labor Day on Monday, September 7, Wethersfield Historical Society's administrative office and genealogical library in the Old Academy (150 Main Street, Wethersfield) will be closed. We will resume our normal hours of operation on Tuesday, September 8. The Wethersfield Museum at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center (200 Main Street Wethersfield) will be open this weekend (Saturday, September 5, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and Sunday, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm). The Keeney Center is closed on Mondays.

Tomorrow's WHS Ancient Burying Ground Tour with Volunteer Research Librarian Martha Smart features an extra stop. (The following is reprinted from our online newsletter, the Almanac.)

2026 marks the 45th anniversary of the death of Estelle Trebert Griswold. She was a party in the 1965 Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut. This court case overturned Connecticut’s anti-birth
control statute on the grounds of a marital couple’s right to privacy.
For her role in this landmark court case, Estelle Trebert Griswold
was later inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. In commemoration of this anniversary, her gravestone is included in tomorrow's tour.

This tour is the penultimate edition for this season. You will only have one more chance to take Martha's tour (and this will be the only tour to include Estelle Trebert Griswold's grave).

Those of you familiar with the tour know that tours convene shortly before 10:00 am at the red barn beside First Church’s (250 Main Street, Wethersield) parking lot. Pre-registration is not required. This tour may be cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather. A suggested donation of $10 (cash or check payable to Wethersfield Historical Society only) is requested from non-members. Current members of Wethersfield Historical Society receive free admission.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Ancient Burying Ground Tour scheduled for Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 am has been cancelled. Wethersfield Historical Society sincerely regrets any inconvenience and hopes that you can attend the tour on one of the other offered dates (June 20, September 5, or October 24). All other scheduled activities that are part of History Day for Families will take place.
