Check out the new growth!

Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica) is an popular evergreen shrub with year-round interest, featuring drooping clusters of lily-of-the-valley-like flowers in early spring, colorful new foliage (bronze, red, or orange), and attractive winter flower buds. It thrives in partial shade and moist, well-drained, acidic soil, making it ideal for woodland gardens, foundations, and borders, and it is deer-resistant.

Going Native: Think of it as a goal-

Using native plants doesn't have to be an "all or nothing" decision. If you've got a garden filled with nonnative cultivars of perennials, shrubs, and trees think about setting a realistic goal you can work toward achieving. Perhaps you try for 70% natives? You don't need to rip everything out today, but choose natives as you edit your garden over time. I'm not throwing out my mother's peonies or my grandmothers's lavender, but I'm likely to make other choices for new additions. Do try to avoid invasives at all costs.

In honor of World Bee Day, enjoy these photos from our resident beekeeper, Judith! This day is celebrated annually on May 20 to raise global awareness about the critical role bees and other pollinators play in sustaining ecosystems and addressing global food security. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Anton Janša, an 18th-century pioneer of modern beekeeping from Slovenia!
